2019 Château La Grave, Fronsac

2019 Château La Grave, Fronsac

Changing trends and styles seem to be one of the only constants in wine; what’s old and outdated eventually comes back in style, and those who never changed reap the rewards. Paul Barre, owner and vigneron of Château La Grave was such a man. His commitment to biodynamic farming and traditional winemaking cemented him as one of Bordeaux’s vanguard. His wines always contrasted the extracted, overly oaked, high octane wines that have become trendy of late. This Fronsac (in the shadow of St. Emilion a mere 12 km away) brings a level of brightness and fragrant lift not often encountered in the region, on either bank of the Gironde.

Today’s wine is a deep yet supple Bordeaux from Paul’s son Gabriel and his wife Edith. They have followed in Paul’s footsteps and continue to build on his legacy as a winemaker who sits above trends, choosing to focus simply on making classically great wine. This is one of Bordeaux's hidden gems.

A right bank blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Grapes are farmed under strict biodynamic principles before being harvested by hand. In the winery, vinification is simple, grapes are crushed and fermented on the skins for a few weeks before being pressed into stainless steel for fermentation. The wine is then racked into used oak barrels to age before being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Graceful AND powerful, this bottle opens with black cherries, dried violets, cigar box and a hint of black tea. The palate is a welcome contradiction of juicy red cherries, cacao and an almost minty earthiness. Firm tannins and structure abound with plenty of freshness. Cellar if you want, or give this some air and pair with anything going on the grill this weekend, from burgers and brats to choice cuts of beef and dig in.
Established in 1974, Paul Barre has been known for several decades as a pioneer of biodynamic principles in France. This 10-hectare estate located in Fronsac has been farming in this manner since 1990. Since 2013 the vineyard has been plowed by horses and vinification is deployed with minimal input. Paul’s vineyard has been taken over by his son Gabriel and his wife, Edith. Following in his father's footsteps, Gabriel and his wife continue to be artisans of the land.
