Exclusive: 2019 Loghi Brunello di Montalcino

Exclusive: 2019 Loghi Brunello di Montalcino

I love championing the underdog. Discovering tiny estates and introducing them to you thrills me to no end. I delight in uncovering winemakers who craft some of the greatest wines of their appellation, but are often overshadowed by more grandiose properties with greater means of self promotion.

I can't think of an estate that exemplifies this more than Montalcino's Azienda Loghi. A small family farm home to olive trees, truffles and a scant 4 hectares of old-vine Sangiovese, nestled in the heart of the famous Orcia Valley.

Today's Brunello di Montalcino is undoubtedly, one of the most impressive expressions of Sangiovese I have recently tasted. It exudes the power and density this warm valley is known for, yet does so with precision and lift. The fruit is sourced from a select few rows of vines that have been singled out for their low yields and immensely concentrated grape clusters. This wine's true greatness lies in its ability to deliver inherent richness with soaring, elegant aromatics and silky textures. A clear and distinct example of why Montalcino is such an extraordinary terroir for Sangiovese.

As you can imagine, production here is tiny, we feel incredibly fortunate to have secured a small cache of the highly sought after 2019s.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2019 Azienda Loghi, Brunello di Montalacino in South Carolina.

100% Sangiovese, organically grown on clay and sand. Fruit is sourced from a 1 hectare parcel of selected vines. Grapes are hand harvested and fermented with ambient yeast in stainless steel. The wine is then aged in large, traditional Slavonian oak casks for 2 years before being bottled, where it rests for an additional 3 years before release.

Exuberant off the rip, the nose alone lets you know this wine came from carefully 'chosen grapes'. Opens with black cherry, raspberry, eucalyptus, leather, rosemary and pretty violet notes. The palate is traditional Brunello through and through, displaying concentrated, brooding dark berries, mint, wet earth, truffle and a touch of balsam on the long, silky finish. A wine that's clearly, distinctly and fantastically, Brunello.
A small family farm, Azienda Loghi is located a mere seventeen kilometers north of Montalcino in an area also famous for its white truffles, which some say rival Alba's.

The property consists of 52 hectares, much of it is covered by natural forests, where Valentino Berni is the third generation winemaker and truffle hunter. Following his lineage, his farming is pristine and strictly natural. In the cellar, he follows a minimal, traditional approach: spontaneous ferments and only used, large Slavonian oak for élevage. This is an estate deserving of the spotlight, though it doesn't seek it.
