Exclusive: 2019 Mazière 'G' Rouge

It's easy to believe that less intervention equals better wine. We often live by this rule, touting winemakers' hands-off techniques in the cellar. Yet this kind of thinking has led many to believe that refinement, elegance and polish are out of the question for those who utilize these more 'natural' winemaking methods.

Fabrice Monnin of Mazière defys this maxim, as he intervenes in his wines all the time. He sometimes describes himself as an éleveur, a term that is hard to translate elegantly, but it's someone who takes care of élevage: the progression of wine from fermented juice onwards. He's most often found in his cellar, tinkering with a myriad of wine-filled barrels at different stages of evolution. He's constantly tasting and augmenting in order to achieve the greatest possible outcome for each cuvée. One thing is constant however, no wine leaves Mazière unless it is absolutely ready to drink, no matter how much time that takes.

It's this unwavering dedication to quality that I admire so greatly about Mazière, especially in today's incredibly special and rare wine. It's a wild and deeply flavored Grenache which possesses remarkable precision, poise and elegance. I believe it exceeds some of the Rhône's best, and carries itself with the same regal stature as the great reds of Châteuneuf-du-Pape.

Fabrice makes wine of such high caliber that it's hard to disagree with his methods.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2019 Mazières 'G' Grenache in South Carolina

100% Grenache from gnarly, 60-100-year-old head-trained vines planted on rare parcels of Jurassienne marl soils in Corbières. Manually harvested and fermented in cask for several weeks before pressing and aging in used oak barrels of varying size. Certain barrels are then selected based on their evolution and blended before bottling. This wine is all about timing and alchemy.

The nose opens with bouyant aromas of black cherry compote, plum, violet, pepper, leather and savory saucisson sec. The palate is simultaneously lithe and rich, carrying a massive array of bold, black fruit layered with classic garrigue and pretty floral tones. Refined tannins and bright acidity provide lift and structure for all the lush, deep flavors. There's a level of polish you'd expect from a prime Châteauneuf estate. This is the miracle of Mazière.
Fabrice Monnin is a one of a kind winemaker. Starting his carrer as a geologist from the Jura, he was always enamored with the rustic, honest wines his home is known for. After running a wine bar in Corbières with his wife for many years, he finally made the jump to vigneron and bought Mazière from the Labouygues family in 2013. An estate that had been safeguarded by the family for generations.

There's just over two hectares of old vines spread across the high altitude estate. Fabrice is an expert farmer, but his abilities to transform wines during aging is what sets him apart. Patience is said to be a virtue, and Fabrice's wines embody this completely.
