2020 was a year we won't soon forget, a year that changed the world forever. It's hard to find solace in a time filled with such tragedy and despair, but now, years later, we find something wonderful has arisen from devastation.
With the 2020s now emerging from their cellars in Piedmont, it's clear these are glorious wines, I have been roundly impressed by the vintage. The wines are effusive, expressive and wide open, full of immediate gratification. They're charming and delicious out of the gate, yet they're deeply concentrated with a sturdy backbone, setting them up for a long life ahead. These are early drinking wines that also have the capacity to evolve with age, a distinct, seldom occurring combination.
Today's Barbaresco, from the multi-generational Ada Nada estate, is my wine of the vintage: it's the best wine I've tasted from this extraordinary year. As traditional as it gets, this single vineyard cuvée has everything I love in great Barbaresco: elegance, soaring, crystal clear aromatics and lush, velvety textures. A wine of this caliber would usually take decades to unwind and taste this good, but in the magical vintage of 2020, it's ready to drink tonight.
I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2020 Ada Nada 'Valeirano' Barbaresco in South Carolina. |

100% Nebbiolo from the Valeirano cru in Treiso, planted in 1971 at 200-350 meters above sea level. The southeast facing site is comprised of white marl soils, full of ancient marine limestone. After manual harvest, the grapes are crushed and macerate in stainless steel for two weeks before being pressed and racked into traditional, large Botti to age for two years, with a small overflow going into neutral barrique. Aged an additional 8 months in bottle before release.
Gem-toned and vivid in the glass, this is a bright, explosive expression of traditional Barbaresco. The nose is packed with fresh red raspberry, dried cherry and blood orange, contrasted by rose petal, Ceylon cinnamon and a hint of coffee bean. The lifted palate glides with red fruits, sun baked earth, sandalwood and serious limestone cut. A beautiful and complete wine already at the height of its powers.

Originally founded in 1919 by Carlos Nada, Ada Nada has remained a family estate across four generations. Today run by Anna Lisa Nada and her husband Elvio, who has joined the family and taken over as winemaker, while Anna Lisa handles the agritourismo at the estate.
Their methods are simple, and they do everything to balance modernity and tradition. Everything is farmed organically and harvests are always by hand, botti are used per tradition, but they keep barriques on hand to use in certain cases. Never the flashiest winery, but always a favorite, this is Barbaresco as it lives and breathes: a real family making real wine the best way they know how. |
