Exclusive: 2020 Baudry 'La Croix Boissee' Chinon

The French have a lovely phrase for the ideal position on a slope: 'Mi-Pente'. The term is infinitely more elegant than mid-slope and it captures that unicorn of sites where the soils are shallow enough to stress the vines yet deep enough to offer nutrients to the roots. Where the pitch is steep enough to give each row a moment in the sun, yet shallow enough to avoid erosion. The vineyard holdings that occupy the 'Mi-pente', whether in Burgundy, the Loire or Rhône, are almost always owned and farmed by the region's stalwarts, the appellation's Mt. Rushmore.

Today's wine, from Loire legend and house favorite Bernard Baudry, hails from exactly that perfect location, and produces one of the greatest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the world. If they were to classify the Loire's plots in a Burgundian style hierarchy, this site would surely qualify as Grand Cru. I personally like to think of it as Cab Franc's Chambertin, as it's a powerful, grandiose red with broad shoulders and deep, brooding flavors. Almost Bordeaux-like in stature but with Loire elegance.

I am proud to offer the only bottles of 2020 Bernard Baudry 'La Croix Boisée' Chinon in South Carolina.

100% Cabernet Franc planted precisely on the mi-pente of a south-facing slope rising from the Vienne river. La Croix Boissée sits on an outcropping of limestone that imbues this wine with an elegance more often associated with the great wines of Burgundy. The fruit is hand-harvested, de-stemmed and moved by gravity into cement vats where it ferments with native yeasts and without sulfur. The wine then ages in old barrique for two years, followed by two more in bottle before release.

This wine is already on full display with layered aromas of blackberry, cassis, plum, graphite and camphor. The palate is dense and a bit fat yet full of freshness and precision. Its intense concentration of black fruit and earth is balanced by floral elegance and polished tannins. Incredibly delicious, and still one of the great value's in French wine.
It is impossible to think of Chinon without uttering the name Baudry. Bernarnd Baudry acquired his first holdings in 1975 and is undoubtably one of Chinon’s most outstanding producers, not to mention one of the greatest cultivators of Cabernet Franc.

Founded in 1975 with just two hectares, Bernard has grown his estate to its current size of 32. Upon retirement, he allowed his son Matthieu, who began working by his side in 2000, to assume the role of lead winemaker. Together they continue to make wines which set THE standard in Chinon, noted for their exquisite precision, concentration and texture; unquestionably amongst the finest and most expressive in the region.
