Exclusive: 2020 Campi di Fonterenza 'Albarello'

I've been reaching for Sangiovese a lot lately, it's savory combination of earthy fruit and bright acidity have been a perfect segue into Fall. And while the grape is ubiquitous in Tuscany, it reaches its apex in the hills of Montalcino.

Today's wine is a rarely seen bottling of Sangiovese from the heart of the famous Montalcino zone. Unlike most Brunello, this wine, from the micro-estate of Fonterenza, is grown on a minuscule half hectare (1.2 acre) vineyard in the southeast corner of the appellation. Single site Brunello di Montalcino is almost unheard of, but the twin sisters of Fonterenza were so taken by the quality of fruit this vineyard produces, they bottled it separately. No doubt due to its vine's ability to cultivate tiny grape clusters, which are extremely low-yielding but highly concentrated.

Although not labeled as such, they raise it almost identically to their Brunello, with long aging in barrel before release. The results are singular and magical, a red with soaring aromatics and deep palate density. This is a world-class and near perfect Italian wine, one of the greatest and most unique expressions of Sangiovese from Montalcino I've ever tasted.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2020 Fonterenza 'Albarello' in South Carolina.

100% Sangiovese from old, goblet trained vines grown on gabro soils. Without supports to cling to, the vines naturally produce very low yields and concentrated berries. The fruit is de-stemmed and fermented with native yeasts in steel tanks, then aged for 2 years in a combination of stainless steel and massive Slavonian oak barrels. Bottled without filtration.

This goes far beyond your average Brunello. Opens with a lifted and broad nose of morello cherry and raspberry coulis, accented by notes of sandalwood, new leather, rosemary and five spice. The palate pops with succulent berry and blonde tobacco, followed by earthy dried porcini and licorice tones. A deeply saturated, moorish mid-palate is followed by Sangiovese's textbook, cleansing bright acidity. Tuscan wine doesn't get much better than this.
Twin sisters Margherita and Francesca Padovani founded Fonterenza close to twenty-five years ago, working the farm that had been in their family since the early 1970s. The winery is compromised of a mere 4 hectares from which four wines are produced, though occasionally the sisters buy grapes from close friends to produce a white wine here and there. The vineyards are surrounded by bucolic Tuscan forest and olive groves, and the vines are farmed biodynamically.

In the cellar, everything is minimal intervention, with native yeasts and large, used oak Botti, where the wines age as long as necessary. These are some of the most coveted wines in Montalcino.
