Just before Thanksgiving and the onslaught of last year's holiday season, I attended an important tasting in Atlanta. Important because it was a gathering of some very influential winemakers from France and Italy, all of whom are represented by trail blazing importers Louis/Dressner. Of the dozens of great wines on display that day, one stood out immediately. From the first whiff I knew I had something special in my glass.
Today's wine from Rhône wizard Éric Texier, surprised me: it's comprised of Roussanne, a variety that tends to produce soft, rounded white wines lacking in acidity and freshness, but leave it to M. Texier to turn Roussanne upside down. Unlike the prevalent whites from this part of France, this wine is absolutely crackling with energy, full of vibrant citrus, white stone fruit and deep mid-palate concentration. There's a central nerve of acidity here I have not experienced in any white Rhône I've ever had. This is the anti-Rhône white, and that's perhaps why I love it so much. I am proud to offer the only bottles of 2020 Éric Texier 'Les Chailles' in South Carolina!
