Exclusive: 2021 Tripoz 1ére Reserve Macon Loche

For Burgundy fanatics like me, watching the climbing prices for bottles from this storied area has been shocking. Over the last several years, wines from producers and regions I love have become out of reach for most wine lovers. It has no doubt, become a tall order to find well-priced Burgundies.

One of my greatest joys as a buyer is sourcing and discovering wines for the shop that over-deliver. Wines that possess depth and complexity without breaking the bank. Over the last several vintages, the wines of Celine and Laurent Tripoz have consistently done just that, overachieved in their category. This bottle, from the spectacular 2021 vintage is everything I adore about white Burgundy, without the sticker shock.

Drinking lofty Grand Crus has certainly made for some of my life's most unforgettable experiences, but I also find immense joy in a great weeknight glass as well. There is a time and place for both, and when you find the right wine, they can be equally pleasurable.

Today, I am proud to offer the only bottles of 2021 Tripoz '1ère Réserve' Pouilly-Loché in South Carolina.

100% Chardonnay from vines located just outside the village of Loché, grown on limestone-rich soils (similar soils to the ones found in the Cote d'Or). The wine spends almost two years in used oak barriques before bottling. This is the domain's most age-worthy and complex wine.

Opens with clear, defined aromas of lemon zest, white grapefruit, flinty reduction and a hint of spice-laced nougat. The palate is intense and powerful yet refined and harmonious, with bright orchard fruit balanced by salty minerals, beautifully creamy textures and a stern backbone of cleansing, citrus acidity. Burgundy's brilliance, perfectly captured.
The wines from the Mâcon have never garnered the accolades and reputations compared to their northern brethren in the Côte d'Or. As Laurent Tripoz puts it: "The Maconnais is not blessed with the great terroirs of northern Burgundy, we have to work harder to get good wines here."

Celine and Laurent Tripoz established their estate in 1986 by purchasing some small parcels of vines around the small village of Loché, where the cellar is located. They sold grapes to their local co-op at first, it wasn't until 1990 that they began bottling their own wine.

Farming is biodynamic (Demeter certified), while in the cellar, Céline and Laurent believe that doing everything naturally is crucial to coaxing the maximum amount of quality from terroir they see as being less prestigious than other parts of Burgundy. These are some of the purest and most precise wines to come out of the Mâconnais I have ever had, they won't stay around for long.
