Exclusive: 2023 Clos du Tue-Boeuf 'Frileuse' Cheverny Blanc

Exclusive: 2023 Clos du Tue-Boeuf 'Frileuse' Cheverny Blanc

Easily the best white wine I've had all year walked in the door just this week. As someone who rarely touches Sancerre, especially in these days of climbing prices, this wine made me rethink my love (or lack-thereof) of Sauvignon Blanc. While Sancerre's rise in popularity has coincided with a decline in quality, this wine stands as a welcome alternative.

Today's wine is the perfect reason why: it tones down Sauvignon Blanc's bombastic aromas and green, grassy flavors. Instead coaxing out a more subtle, elegant side of the usually showy variety. In doing so, it reveals a core of deep, stony minerality and angular textures. This is a white wine that puts terroir first, and a testament to why the Loire Valley is still home to the greatest Sauvignon Blancs in the world.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2023 Clos du Tue-Boeuf 'Frileuse' Cheverny in South Carolina.

A blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Chardonnay and Menu Pineau, all interplanted on flinty, clay soils. The organically grown grapes are hand harvested and immediately pressed to preserve freshness and clarity of fruit. The wine ferments and ages entirely in older French oak barriques, on the lees, with regular batonnage for six months. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

A lucid, transparent nose ripe lemon, quince, pineapple, white pepper and an edge of flinty minerality. There's a crisp, mouthwatering freshness to the palate as juicy, citrus-driven fruit is contrasted with crushed rock minerality and a brisk, saline finish. A tantalizing white that's a perfect match for aged cheeses or crunchy, salty fried foods.
Clos du Tue-Boeuf is old to say the least. 'Tue-Boeuf' was the name given to a cherished lieu dit in the village of Les Montils, a famous vineyard dating back to the reign of English king Henry III. So prized a plot, it was walled in several centuries ago to protect its precious fruit.

In slightly more modern times, the Puzelat family has owned and operated the vineyard and eponymous estate since the mid-1800s. They have certainly maintained its reputation as a unique and storied terroir. Everything has been farmed organically since the early 90s, and today is headed by Thierry and his young daughter Zoë Puzelat.
