Exclusive: 2023 Ghëddo Dolcetto d'Alba

Exclusive: 2023 Ghëddo Dolcetto d'Alba

I've decided my 2024 holiday wine resolution is to DRINK MORE DOLCETTO, and today's wine is the reason why. In my experience, most Dolcetto are rustic, light, fruity wines devoid of much substance or concentration. The type of wine served from sfuso (bulk wine poured from a tap) at many Piedmontese osteria.

It took this Dolcetto from a couple of young, upstart winemakers in La Morra to flip Dolcetto's mundane script for me. Finally, a version that showcases just how wonderfully delicious this grape can be. Unlike so many, Ghëddo's Dolcetto is absolutely jam-packed with flavor. There's an uncommon seriousness to this wine; a density of fruit flavor that is simply unmatched in the category. Yet it still upholds Dolcetto's spirited and refreshing personality, this is Piedmont's table wine after all. Easily the best version of this grape I've ever had. If you love Cru Beaujolais or superior, hight-quality Langhe Nebbiolo, this wine is for you.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2023 Ghëddo, Dolceto d'Alba in South Carolina.

Sourced from a tiny, north-east facing plot of Dolcetto planted on clay-loam soils. After a manual harvest, the grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and fermented with native yeasts for just under a week. The wine is then pressed and racked in to concrete tanks where it ages for six months before being bottled without fining or filtration.

An intensely deep, opaque wine in the glass, the nose is lush with black cherries, plums, violets, anise, tobacco leaf and white peppercorn. Crunchy and fresh on the palate, the brilliant acidity carries waves of brambly blackberries and herbs to a spicy, earthy finish. All these dense flavors buttressed by smooth, polished tannins. The perfect Fall drinking companion.
Ghëddo is the work of friends Giovanni and Matthias, both of whom have little to no history in Piedmont. They went to college to study subjects other than winemaking, but both eventually found their way to Barolo.

Starting from scratch, these two have spent the past few years slowly building up holdings to a whopping 3 hectares! Giovanni focuses on the farming and winemaking, while Matthias heads the administrative and marketing. Together, the two are taking a smaller, more artisan approach to winemaking in Piedmont, and Italian wine lovers are taking notice.
