Exclusive: Chateau Pey Labrie 2008

Exclusive: Chateau Pey Labrie 2008

What if I told you there was a perfectly aged Bordeaux, stored in the winery's cellar, ready to drink TONIGHT, and available for less than $50/bottle

Well...that is exaclty what I'm telling you.

If I've learned anything about the great wines of Bordeaux over the course of my 20 year career, it's that the top wines beg for some age to really achieve their destiny as the world's best.

Today's 2008, from old-school stalwart, Château Moulin Pey-Labrie produces some of the most beautifully aromatic wines on the Right Bank. No doubt due to its perfectly pitched, limestone-laden, hillside vineyards situated just a stone's throw from Pomerol. This combination of limestone soils, old-vine Merlot, and time in bottle have coalesced in bringing this wine to it's fullest potential. It exudes black, plummy fruit with a touch of that classic Pomerol black truffle (Château Petrus, anyone?). It's deep and soulful and exactly the way top Bordeaux should be.

I am proud to offer the ONLY bottles of 2008 Château Moulin Pey-Labrie in South Carolina.

Mostly Merlot with a touch of Malbec grown biodynamically, planted at high density, and averaging 65 years of age. The fruit is hand harvested, de-stemmed, and fermented in glass-lined concrete vats with regular pigéage. Racked into French oak barrels (one third new), where it rests for 12 months before being bottled.

An expressive and profound wine that's absolutely singing right now. Opens with crème de cassis, grilled plum, strawberry, crushed violet and earthy woodsiness. There's plenty of density on the lush palate, but it's perfectly parried by velvety textures, crisp black currant fruit, mellow tobacco and gentle spice. This wine is ready to roll, simply pop and enjoy.
Grégoire and Bénédicte Hubau's Château Moulin Pey-Labrie sits a few miles west of Pomerol, just above the Dordogne River. Perched at the top of a beautiful hillside, it sticks out in this mostly flat part of Bordeaux. And while the soils here are dominated by the usual clay and gravel, the Hubaus’ vines are planted on limestone slopes.

It's this noteworthy terroir, and the Hubaus’ deft winemaking that stand out, producing wines known for their vibrancy and freshness. Imagine the small, avant-garde farmers typically found in the Loire or Beaujolais transposed onto a Bordeaux landscape, and you have the Hubau family. For decades, they have been widely regarded as pioneers of progressive farming and winemaking in this often-staid region.
