Exclusive: Genot Boulander Mercurey Sazenay

This wine is so well made, so exquisite in delivering Burgundy's elusive elegance, it will make you forget all about chasing the region's more famous villages and glitzy domaines. This wine proves the old maxim that the producer trumps all. Ultimately, no matter where the wine is grown, when it's in the right hands, it can be every bit as delicious and thought provoking as any of its' peers, and in this case even more so.

While the Premier Cru vineyard of Mercurey-Sazenay is considered the Côte Chalonnaise's top site, the region is primarily known for it's light, simple, straightforward wines. Most are a far cry from the wines of the regal villages to its north. But Domaine Génot-Boulanger has dug deeper than any before, and managed to coax a certain depth, richness and purity of fruit more closely associated with Vosne-Romanée or Chambolle-Musigny than of this humble appellation. This is a wine that is nothing short of amazing, and out-drinks most red Burgundy at a fraction of the cost.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2019 Domaine Génot-Boulanger, Mercurey-Sazenay 1er Cru in South Carolina!

Guillaume and Aude Lavollée are the fourth generation at Génot-Boulanger. Since 2008, they've worked tirelessly to improve the quality of their wines. They've transitioned to organic farming and begun experimenting with biodynamics. Their philosophy is “maximum work in the vineyards for minimum intervention in the winery.” The painstaking work has paid off, as the wines at this address have never been better. Guillaume's meteoric rise over the last several vintages is no coincidence; his name is now consistently mentioned in collector's circles. These are wines to snatch up, before prices catch up to the incredible quality.
100% Pinot Noir from an eastern facing, mid-slope parcel planted on limestone and sand. The hand-harvested grapes are de-stemmed and fermented with native yeast. The wine ages for 12 months in 20% new French oak barrels. Bottled un-fined and un-filtered.

Bursting with bright, lucid red cherry and raspberry fruit, rose petal, gentle spice and damp earth. The plush, juicy palate of summer berries and spice are gently balanced with concentrated mid-palate minerality, forest floor notes and silky tannins. A wine of beauty, poise and stature. A true GRANDE VIN.
