Exclusive: JP Brun 'Grille Midi' Fleurie 2021

Exclusive: JP Brun 'Grille Midi' Fleurie 2021

You regulars should be quite familiar with the wines of Jean-Paul Brun. His bottles have adorned our shelves since day one, and have been praised in these newsletters many times. Brun is simply my favorite winemaker in Beaujolais. Each cuvée is a perfectly pure expression of Gamay: fresh, fragrant, and exquisitely balanced. Brun's ability to tame the grape's inherent fruitiness is what I admire most in his wines. They have incomparable restraint, a Pinot-like poise that I haven't encountered in any other Gamay. If Beaujolais is truly considered Burgundy, the proof is in this wine.

Today's Fleurie is Brun to the max, a wine so distinct it took me by surprise at a recent tasting. I believe it's one of the best wines he's ever made. It's sourced from the amphitheater-shaped vineyard of 'Grille Midi', where ample sunshine and deep granitic soils yield some of the ripest, most pristine fruit in Fleurie.

This is a powerful and hearty expression of Gamay, whose deep and brooding flavors are in stark contrast to Beaujolais' other Crus. Make no mistake, it still displays all of Brun's hallmark elegance and meticulous wine making, this time rendered through a singular and bold terroir.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2021 Jean-Paul Brun 'Grille Midi' Fleurie in South Carolina.

100% Gamay from Fleurie's extraordinary Grille Midi where the vines receive plenty of sunshine and warmth in the amphitheater shaped vineyard. Brun selects only the finest grapes from the oldest vines for this cuvée, ensuring a deeply concentrated final wine. Manually harvested, de-stemmed and macerated for a long four weeks in concrete tanks, then racked into used oak barrels where it ages for 12 months before bottling.

A dense, effusive, almost flamboyant nose of black cherries, raspberry compote, English Breakfast tea, baking spices, anise and violets. There's plenty of structure and crunchy granitic minerals to balance the sumptuous palate. Its medium weight and bright freshness effortlessly match the incredible intensity and power of this rare wine. A singular, world-class Fleurie.
Jean-Paul Brun, Beaujolais' native and star, has championed the traditional winemaking practices of the region while also supporting more modern, organic farming methods. He rejects the laboratory yeasts and chaptalizing techniques used by many producers in the region, crafting honest, terroir reflective wines.

Even with his intimate involvement in the wines, the breadth of his production and farming is shocking. Terres Dorées, Brun's domaine, spans more than 60 hectares of vines, producing a wine from almost every Cru. He is a true master of Beaujolais.
