Holiday Countdown 2024 (DAY 1) - Laherte-Frères 'Nature de Craie' Premier Cru

STARTING TODAY, I will highlight one special wine each day for the next 10 days. These are the 10 wines that stood out amongst the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 1:
We're starting this year's countdown with one of the purest and most beautiful wines I have ever tasted. I sampled a lot of wonderful Champagne this year, including many during my visit to the region in February, but today's bottle tops them all. This is easily the most delicious and expressive Champagne I drank all year, period.

Today's offer came late to the line up, having only been brought in recently, but at first sip I knew we had our hands on something truly special. This champagne from the generational estate, Laherte Frères, is the total package: balancing biscuit-y richness with sensational acidity and transparent chalky minerals. A Blanc de Blancs in the truest sense of the style and a modern Champagne classic. A wine so good, I bought all that was available.

Treat yourself to one of the most outstanding wines I drank all year...you've earned it.

100% Chardonnay from old-vine parcels located in two different 1er Cru villages, planted on classic, chalky Côte des Blancs soils. Grapes are hand-harvested and rigorously sorted, the bunches are never pressed, as this wine is free run juice only, extremely rare in Champagne and the main reason for its superlative purity. Fermented with ambient yeast in French oak. After blending and bottling, the wine ages on the lees for 15 months before disgorgement by hand, with zero dosage (added sugar).

It's hard to find a more pure Champagne than this one. An ethereal and poised nose of lemon, green apple, elegant floral notes, white pepper and superfine, chalk dust minerality. Verve and tension abound on the palate, displaying a cornucopia of citrus, golden apple and toasted brioche. The wine's real magic lies in the exquisite balance of richness and delicacy. A beauty in every sense.
There's something to be said about those who fly under the radar. Laherte-Frères was founded in 1889 and has remained a family affair for 7 generations. Never a flashy winery, Laherte-Frères was happy to simply make quality wine and sell grapes to the large houses on the side. Coinciding with the rising wave of grower Champagne in the aughts, the young Aurélien Laherte took the reins from his father and has been the impetus behind Laherte-Fréres rising star since.

His focus on terroir and minimal intervention winemaking have made him a favorite, not just for us, but for Champagne lovers the world over. Still very much in his prime, Aurélien's wines we reach for often: always interesting and always delicious.
