Holiday Countdown 2024 (DAY 10) - Christian Tschida 'Himmel auf Erden Grande Cuvée' Weiss 2022

These are the top wines that stood out among the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 10:
This was one of the most amazing wines I've tasted this year and one of the most challenging to articulate. When I drank this wine a couple of months ago, the first descriptor I jotted down was spellbinding.

Yes, it has everything I love in white wine: clarity, precision, bright acidity and textured minerals. But this wine went beyond just amazing scents and flavors; there was an added dimension, this wine is full of energy. It feels alive on your palate, bounding from one flavor to another. It's pure excitement to drink, the kind of wine that makes you sit up and pay attention to it.

A scintillating, bone-dry blend of Gruner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc, from one of Austria's most talented and cerebral winemakers. Incredibly balanced, it walks the line between finesse and depth, youthful freshness and concentration only found in age-able wines.

This is a beautiful, living wine that brings you in deeper and deeper as it unfurls in the glass over the course of a meal. Truly astonishing.

A blend of Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc from 60-year-old vines planted on sheer, exposed limestone bedrock. Grapes are hand-harvested and crushed by foot before pressed into large, neutral oak barrels to ferment, then racked into 1500L barrels where is ages for 12 months before being bottled without fining or filtration.

A dazzling, vibrant nose of Meyer lemon, summer peach, orange zest, white flowers and crushed river stone minerality. Juicy and bracingly dry, the Sauvignon Blanc shines on the palate in the form of fresh citrus acidity, backed by ginger spice and salty minerals. I can best sum this wine up in one word: WOW.
Christian Tschida (pronounced like “chee-tah”) is the 4th generation to helm his winery, farming 11 hectares of old vines in a national park in eastern Austria.

His focus is on the farming. The vineyards are known for being completely overgrown with cover crops that help increase and preserve biodiversity, while also forcing the vines deeper into the soil to search for nutrients. The vineyard is entirely dry farmed, without chemicals, and enjoy a moderating influence from nearby Lake Neusiedler. His wines are true originals, theres is simply nothing like them.
