Holiday Countdown 2024 (DAY 3) - 2021 Maxime Magnon 'La Bégou' Corbières Blanc

These are the top wines that stood out among the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 3:
The rugged mountains of Corbières are home to some of the most exciting, young vingerons in France today. Discovering, tasting and visiting with these intrepid winemakers has been one the highlights of my career. I firmly believe the wines being made here are some of the most underrated anywhere.

I was absolutely floored when I tasted today's wine. A distinct, multi-faceted white that's a direct reflection of this sunny, arid, windswept landscape. Made by Maxime Magnon, a Burgundian born and trained winemaker who defected, and took his talents to Corbières, where he has applied the same detailed, fastidious approach learned at home to this extraordinary terroir. This wine is l
ike Burgundy kissed by southern sun, as importer Kermit Lynch describes it: 'Mediterranean Meursault.'

Loaded with bright citrus, it's complexity, concentration and texture is unlike anything I have ever tasted in a southern French white. Maxime has harnessed the natural wildness of these mountains and created something truly special, a white wine without peer.

A blend of Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc with a touch of Carignan Gris, sourced from older vines planted on limestone and schist soils. Manually harvested and directly pressed, the wine ferments in huge oak barrels until dry, then ages for 10 months before bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Crisp and luminous, the nose is an array of lemon zest, white grapefruit, subtle florals and crushed river stone minerality. The palate brims with unmatched freshness and verve, with quintessential texture and notes of green citrus, Anjou pear and deep saline minerality. An elite level white wine crafted by a true vigneron.
Maxime Magnon is a rare bird. A native of Burgundy, he very quickly understood that he had no family ties that would put a winery in his lap, nor did he have the funds to purchase parcels in such an expensive region. So Magnon decided to make his way to Corbières. Having studied under Jean Foillard of Beaujolais fame, and Didier Barral, a local legend, he began applying his Burgundian sensibilities to the varieties of the Languedoc. He has a keen eye for exceptional parcels, most of his vines are planted on pure granite bedrock, with no topsoil and surrounded by whatever brave herbs and flowers cling to the rock face.

An ardent believer in wine making without additives, Maxime eschews any chemicals in the vineyard, being certified organic and working biodynamically, the results are wines of unmatched freshness and elegance.
