Holiday Countdown 2024 (DAY 6) - 2019 Leon Barral Faugères

Holiday Countdown 2024 (DAY 6) - 2019 Leon Barral Faugères

These are the top wines that stood out among the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 6:
As much as I gravitate towards lighter bodied wines of finesse and elegance, sometimes only a rich, muscular and powerful wine will do. When I'm pulling a perfectly cooked rib roast out of the oven, a light Beaujolais simply doesn't cut it. There's something just so soul satisfying about drinking an opulent, earthy red, especially when paired with an equally robust dish. In these instances, I accept no substitute.

From deep within the heart of the Languedoc, Domaine Leon Barral's hearty reds capture everything I love about this beautiful, sun-soaked Mediterranean landscape. But this is no ordinary southern French red blend. Instead this is a wine of deep minerality and concentration derived from the slate soils of Faugères, a soil type not found anywhere else in the region.

With it's heady mix of brambly fruit, Mediterranean herbs, earth and graphite, this wine easily rivals some the best Chateauneuf-du-Papes I've ever had, and at a fraction of the price.

Comprised of 50% Carignan, with equal parts Grenache and Syrah rounding out the blend. Vines range from 40 to 70-years-old, all planted on the typical slate soils of Faugères. Everything is hand harvested and astutely sorted, ensuring only perfectly ripe, pristine fruit is used. Shriveled, sun burnt grapes, which plague too many wines from this region, are never used. Grapes are de-stemmed, fermented with indigenous yeast and macerate for 30 days on the skins, then age for 24 months in concrete tanks before bottling.

Faceted by time into a brilliant ruby in the glass. Earthy cherries, ripe raspberry, licorice, crème de cassis, olive tapenade and peppercorn all swirl on the nose. The palate is a plush, velvety smooth affair, with more robust fruits and savory herbs that are framed by lush tannins softened by bottle age. A heartwarming and deeply satisfying wine that's on full display.
Didier Barral represents the 13th generation to farm this rugged landscape in Faugères. While previous generations grew grapes and sold them off to local cooperatives, Didier was the first to begin estate-bottling in 1993. He has since become a beacon of wine-growing and regenerative farming in Southern France.

Instead of tractors and synthetic chemicals, Didier employs a team of cows to help with weed thinning and fertilization. He encourages the growth of cover crops between vines to maintain a healthy ecosystem within his estate. This philosophy extends to the cellar, where fermentation is always done with native yeasts. He uses gravity (no electric pumps) to move wine downwards from cement fermentation tanks to barrel, and adds minimal sulphites only at bottling. This approach ultimately translates to tremendously complex and age-worthy wines.
