Holiday Countdown 2024 (DAY 7) - 2022 Benjamin Leroux 'Sous le Château' Saint-Romain

These are the top wines that stood out among the thousands of wines I tasted this year. Some are always in stock, some are rare and hard to find, but all of them are sure to fill you with joy this Holiday Season.
DAY 7:
Burgundy is a small region whose vineyards have been poured over and dissected for centuries. Nevertheless, even with all of this endless study and keen attention, undiscovered plots tucked into overlooked nooks and crannies still remain. It's in these off-the-beaten-path villages where wine lovers find so much joy. Burghounds rejoice in their discovery with the same zeal as they do procuring a bottle of Grand Cru.

Located just behind Meursault, the village of Saint-Romain is a an insider's secret. Due to it's proximity, it displays many of the same qualities of its illustrious neighbor, yet has always lived in its' outsized shadow.

Today's Saint-Romain, from young Burgundian superstar Benjamin Leroux, displays all the characteristics that make Meursault my favorite white wine, exhibiting incredible tension, succulent citrus and orchard fruits that are layered on dense limestone minerality and mouthwatering acidity. It's a white of complexity and reflection, yet drinks with ease and refreshment.

If you want to drink Meursault, but not pay Meursault prices, this wine is for you.

Sourced from just a few rows of vines in the vineyard of 'Sous le Château', totaling a scant hecate in size. This is a cool, high altitude site with raw, exposed limestone soils. Leroux recently took over and converted all farming to organic. Manually harvested, the must is settled to remove any impurities before its moved into large, neutral French oak barrels to ferment then age for 12 months.

Full of verve and vitality, it's exuberant and expressive right out of the bottle. Granny smith apple, lemongrass, white peach and subtle, reductive flinty notes lead to a palate of white grapefruit, lemon and chalky minerals. There's serious tension between the bright fruit, zippy limestone minerality and leesy texture. An elite, refined Grand Vin de Bourgogne.
Benjamin Leroux is widely regarded as one of the most gifted winemakers of his generation, first earning his reputation as general manager of the famed Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard. With 30 years of experience under his belt, he is one of the most coveted young winemakers in the region, and is undoubtedly on the track to becoming a Burgundian great. He excels in finding perfect balance, making wines with ample texture that never compromise tension or minerality.

His collection of small cuvées from prestigious appellations in Burgundy are highly sought after by collectors across the globe. Their purity and subtly are nothing short of legendary.
