As wines from Sicily's Mount Etna continue to explode on the Italian scene, prices have inevitably followed suit. So we wanted to turn your attention to another Italian volcano with a history of producing world class wines. Its vineyards similarly strewn with decomposed lava that have been cultivating vines for centuries. However, this ancient peak offers wines at a fraction of the cost of those from trendy Etna.

Today's wine from the hillsides of Mt. Vesuvius is an astonishing value. A wine with that signature, volcanic minerality we love, yet beaming with freshness and drinkability. All the while delivering a sneaky undercurrent of brashness and boldness one would expect in a red from Campania. It's a casual sipper that shoulders serious concentration with jubilant fruit and distinct terroir.

A perfect wine to accompany your summer grilling...we think it works pretty well with pizza too!

A blend of two native Campanian varieties: mostly Piedirosso with Aglianico added for structure and depth. Both from high elevation vineyards with deep volcanic soils. The grapes are hand harvested and fermented briefly on the skins for at a week before pressing and aging in steel tanks for one year. Aged an additional year in bottle before release.

A beautiful bright ruby in the glass, the nose opens up with dark berries, ripe plum, spice, Mediterranean herbs and a hint of smoke. The palate is serious but fresh: Maraschino cherries, pomegranate molasses, rosemary and black pepper are matched by dusty tannins and bright acidity. This is a ton of wine for the money.
The Matrone family has lived and made wine near Mount Vesuvius since the early 1700's. The current Cantine Matrone is a revival of the old family winery led by Andrea Matrone and his cousin Francesco, who more recently purchased the 18th-century family cantina and have been restoring it while making wine ever since. The family is so intertwined with the history of Mount Vesuvius that the main path to the caldera is still called Strada Matrone.

They don't over complicate things at the Cantina, making only two whites and two reds. Each are genuine, faithful expressions of traditional Vesuvian wine.
