I worship at the alter of Burgundy. Perhaps no other place on earth produces Pinot Noir at the exalted levels attained in it's homeland. Over my career, I've been lucky enough to taste some of the region's greats, several of which went so far as to induce tears of joy. Emotional wines.

Today's wine is easily the most delicious Pinot Noir I've tasted in a long time, but surprise, it's not from Burgundy. This wine is grown on the granitic soils of the Northern Rhône, Syrah's sacred ground. However, when I tasted it blind, I put it smack dab in the Côte d'Or. It carries all the hallmarks of truly great Pinot: aromatically perfumed with silky elegance, pure, detailed fruit and gentle spice. A wine that draws you in, changing subtly over the course of a meal, revealing its complexities bit by bit. This is a Pinot lovers Pinot Noir, and being one myself, I bought the entire lot at first sip.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2021 Les Déplaude de Tartaras 'Tout Compte Fait' in South Carolina.

From mostly young Pinot Noir vines grown just outside the town of Tartaras, near the domaine. Harvested by hand, de-stemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in a combination of stainless steel and used oak, then racked and aged for 9 months in used Burgundian barrique. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Ruby in the glass, the nose opens with cherry, raspberry, rose, spice and a touch of Frankincense. The elegant palate is full of fresh red berry fruit complemented by brown spices and faint cigar box. Complexity abound, framed with silky tannins and fresh acidity. Burgundian indeed.
Pierre-Andre and Anne Deplaude are natives of the tiny Rhône hamlet of Tartaras, a small farming village off the beaten path. So named in reference to the steep cliffs that stand above the river nearby. Though not necessarily wine country, the town sits mere miles from the village of Condrieu, at the very northernmost tip of the Rhône.

For years, grapes were mostly an after thought for the Deplaudes, their focus had always been dairy cows and grain. It wasn't until a drop in milk prices that shifted their focus to winemaking. “We were farmers before we were vignerons” as they like to say. Their first vintage was 2004 and they have been farming grapes biodynamically ever since. They normally sell a large portion of their production (around 19,000 bottles) to private customers locally.
