Like everyone, I tend to dig myself into ruts: I fall in love with one particular style and it becomes the only wine I drink for months on end. For many, many months the only white wines I craved were wines with searingly high acidity, at any cost. But as my palate has matured, I've learned to appreciate a third component in white wines: texture. Or more specifically, how a wine FEELS on my palate. Recently, I've derived immense pleasure from white wines' textures, even more than aromas and flavors. Texture adds an extra dimension that I was previously missing.

Today's wine, from a young vigneron in the Southern Rhône, is exactly what I've been craving lately. A beautifully textured wine that's the perfect antidote to my ubiquitous, nothing-but-citrus whites. Don't get me wrong, there is freshness in spades here, it's bursting with crisp orchard fruits and ripe lemon, but its deep, textural component is what I love most. You simply can't find it in hollow, citric wines.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2022 Domaine de la Goguette 'Bleu Ciel' Blanc in South Carolina.

An über-traditional Rhône blend of Grenache Blanc and Bourboulenc, an ancient grape that lends acidity and energy to white blends. Hand harvested and direct pressed, the Grenache Blanc ferments and ages in neutral oak barrels, while the Bourboulenc does the same in stainless steel, both for five months. After blending, the wine ages another 2 months before being racked and bottled without fining or filtering.

A brilliant gold in the glass. The nose is packed with luscious Meyer lemon, white peach, green pear, panettone, fresh cream and white flowers. The palate is layered and richly textured but never feels heavy or overwhelming. Crunchy orchard fruits and subtle spices are accented by driving, salty minerality and lemony freshness. A brilliant white wine and a perfect change of pace.
Domaine de la Goguette sits in the Southern Rhône village of Collias, due just west of Avignon. Here, Julien and Lisa Mary organically farm 4 hectares of traditional Rhône varieties. While many have condemned the region as a place capable of only fat, tannic reds, Goguette is the opposite, making real wines with complexity, elegance and soul. Theirs are lighter, fresher expressions of these classic grapes, and are immensely drinkable.

With as little intervention as possible, Julien has made serious progress in changing the narrative around this historic wine region. This is a young domaine, and Monarch is thrilled to help tell their story.
