Newsletter: 2022 Jean-François Malsert 'Lou Taïssou' Saint-Joseph

Last February I made the pilgrimage to one of the biggest wine fairs in France. Held in a giant limestone cave in Saumur, La Dive Bouteille is a gathering of hundreds of winemakers from across the globe, who for three days pour wines from their most recent vintages. Over the course of two days, I meandered the stalls tasting a ton of wines and chatting with dozens of winemakers. There were some incredible wines being showcased, no doubt, but of the countless wines I sampled over those 48 hours, today's wine topped them all. The moment I finished tasting with vigneron Jean-François Malsert, I turned to my friend, importer Cason Love and said, 'We have to get these to Monarch!'

Today's wine is that dream realized. It's a Syrah at it's most traditional and pure, just the way I love it. A direct and unadulterated transmission of St. Joseph's steeply heroic, terraced vineyards. This beguiling wine's magic lies in its elusive weaving of bold richness with elegance and lift. A perfect Northern Rhône red whose brash, dark fruits, peppery spice and meaty sauvage are tamed by silky textures and graceful, soaring aromatics.

This is a show-stopping wine, and one of my proudest discoveries. I'm thrilled to finally be able to share it with you.

100% Syrah from a tiny, 1 hectare vineyard spread across steep, terraced plots of granite and loam. The grapes are hand-harvested, partially de-stemmed and and fermented in concrete tanks. Jean-François does a light pigeage to ensure thorough extraction without rough tannins. After pressing, the wine is racked back into concrete for 12 months aging before being bottled, unfined and unfiltered.

Strikingly deep and effusive, the nose blooms with crème de cassis, blackberry, violets, olive tapenade and cracked black peppercorn. The palate is awash in more blue and black fruits, dried herbs, cured saucisson and granitic minerals. A boldly flavored wine tempered by wonderfully pure, detailed fruit, polished tannins and brilliant acidity. This is an unforgettable Syrah.
Coming from a modest vine-growing family, Jean-François Malsert grew up in Tournon, right across the river from the famed hill of Hermitage. His grandfather was the last person in his family to make wine, so with no vineyards of his own, Jean-François started his wine career by opening a home town wine bar specializing in Syrah. Always in search of becoming a vigneron like his grandfather, he apprenticed at wineries in New Zealand and Australia before returning home, where he was gifted a plot of Syrah his grandfather had planted.

Today his holdings have increased to 5.8 hectares spread across Saint Joseph and the broader Northern Rhône. Every single plot is farmed organically with strict attention to detail. From vine to bottle, Malsert has always put his home terroir first.
