Newsletter: 2023 Âmevive Santa Barbara Albariño

Ever the new world skeptic, I approach wine made on domestic soil with a touch of doubt. Shouldn't a wine grown in its ancestral homeland, made by vignerons with generational knowledge, surely have the upper hand? Today's wine answers my domestic pessimism with a resolute and resounding no

Hailing from the cool, foggy Pacific coast of Sta. Barbara County, this Albariño delivers more citrusy zip and briney minerals than the majority of those I've tasted from the grape's native Spanish coast. There's a physical coolness here, almost a touch of eucalyptus, that I have never encountered in a California white wine before. If you're searching for that perfectly crisp and refreshing summer summer white, look no further.

While we snagged as much as we could of this beautiful Albariño from our friends at Âmevive, there's only so much to go around (135 total cases produced). So I suggest you act fast, this wine won't last all summer.

100% Albariño from the Martian Ranch Vineyard in the Alisos Canyon AVA. The vines enjoy a cooling breeze off the Pacific in the form of an evening fog that blankets the vineyard. Planted on rich calcium soils with a mix of shale and sandstone. Grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in steel tank and neutral oak where it ages for six months. Bottled just last month, unfined and unfiltered.

Like walking through a grove of lemon trees, the nose is alive with zesty citrus and white peach with a hint of gravelly, crushed rock minerality. The palate leans into the natural brightness of the grape, using it as the base to build more lemon, lime, and minty blossom flavors with a salty mineral vein. Finishes with a bolt of palate cleansing acidity. The ultimate in summer refreshment.
Wise beyond her years, Alice Anderson grew up in California's Central Valley, later earning a BS in Viticulture and Winemaking from Cal Poly. She has honed her skills working for biodynamic pioneers Rippon in New Zealand and Pierre Gaillard in the Northern Rhône.

Alice leases and farms an eight acre vineyard known as the Ibarra-Young Vineyard in Los Olivos planted in 1971. She began incorporating biodynamic farming practices as soon as she took over and her commitment to regenerative agriculture, carbon reduction, and increasing biodiversity has caught the attention of many prominent California winemakers. Her hand in the cellar is continuously minimal, gently shepherding the fruit into wine. Her wines are as honest and bright as she is.
