Newsletter: 2023 Barone di Villagrande Etna Rosato

There's nothing we find more frustrating than antiquated 'wine rules', or rules in general, for that matter. We believe you should drink what you like, with whatever food you like, any time you like. This current belief that rosé should only be drunk between Memorial and Labor Day is complete nonsense to us. Rosés myriad styles make it too wide a category to be pigeonholed. There are great rosés for every season.

Enter today's savory, autumnal, ultra dry rosé. The perfect wine for exactly this time of year, where nights get cooler but days are still warmed by brilliant sunshine. Crafted by the oldest winery on Sicily's smoldering Mt. Etna, it's an amalgamation of the island's world-famous citrus, Mediterranean sea spay and volcanic minerality. This cooling rosé's piquancy, grounding earthiness and crisp freshness make it the quintessential late-September wine.

A 90/10 blend of Nerello Mascalese, a red variety, and white Carricante. The hand picked grapes are the first on the estate to be harvested, capturing the varieties' naturally high acidities. The Nerello is slowly pressed to draw out only the faintest pink color, while the Carricante is directly pressed. Both are fermented in stainless steel then aged in local, used chestnut barrels for a full year before release, a rarity in this category.

Mouthwatering aromas of pink grapefruit, blood orange, jasmine flowers and a touch of flinty minerals waft from the glass. The medium-bodied palate is packed with pink raspberries and more ruby red citrus. This is a rosé of substance and elegance, yet drinks with ease and refreshment. A wonderful aperitivo, but really shines alongside tuna crudo, caprese salad or even eggplant caponata.
Barone di Villagrande is the oldest winery on Mt. Etna, no on else has continually operated on the surface of the volcano since its founding in 1727. It was then, after several eruptions had marred the landscape, that the Bishop of Catania tasked the Nicolosi family with taming the beast by planting vines. Over hundreds of years, the winery has continued its mission of turning the rich, volcanic hills and flows of Mt. Etna into the famous vineyards we know today.

In the modern era, Barone di Villegrande is still owned by the Nicolosi family, with Marco Nicolosi currently at the helm. Carrying on the tradition of being responsible stewards, everything is farmed organically, producing some of the purest and most original expressions of Mt. Etna wine today.
