Newsletter: 2023 Casa Setaro 'Terramatta' Campania Aglianico

Bargain hunting has become increasingly difficult. Sure there are gallons of cheap wine flooding the market, but to me, those bottles have more in common with Coca-Cola than they do real wine. The wines I love and seek out are made on a human scale, wines reflective of place, culture and tradition. Rooting out wines with outsized value has become one of my most rewarding challenges. I simply love discovering little wines with big personalities.

Today's Aglianico from its homeland of Campania is my newest thrilling discovery. Most Aglianico are massive, high alcohol wines with Barolo-like tannins that usually take years (sometimes decades) to soften and become palatable. This wine however, is sourced from unusually high, cool elevation vineyards that temper the grape's propensity to produce dense, astringent wines. It packs all the bold, dark, robust flavors one would expect from Aglianico, but does so in a vibrant, immensely drinkable frame.

As we say in the biz, this a ton of wine for the money.

I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2023 Casa Setaro 'Terramatta' Aglianico Campania in South Carolina.

100% un-grafted Aglianico, planted in Vesuvius National Park at an elevation of 350 meters, on the slopes of continental Europe's only active volcano. The hand-harvested grapes are de-stemmed and ferment with native yeast in stainless steel where the wine ages for 12 months. Then racked into oak barrels for two months before bottling.

Surprisingly lifted for Aglianico, the wine bursts from the glass in a mix of blackberry, black cherry, violet florals, tobacco and a hint of smoke. The juicy palate is packed with more black fruit, licorice and pain grillé, all supported by soft, plush tannins and lip-smacking, cleansing acidity. This is a mouth-filling, full-flavor wine that drinks effortlessly.
Casa Setaro sits just outside of Naples in the looming umbra of Mt. Vesuvius. Here, Massimo Setaro tends his vines with the help of his wife and children, and has dedicated his life to the unsung heroes and traditions of Campania. He works exclusively with the native Campanian varieties of Aglianico, Piedirosso, Fiano and Greco.

Everything is done by hand and in a sustainable manner: there are no herbicides or chemical fertilizers used in the vineyards. This modus operandi follows through to his cellar, where Massimo intervenes as little as possible.

These wines, like Massimo, are honest, pure and a direct reflection of the ancient volcano from which they come.
