Producer Spotlight: Envinate (2024)

Producer Spotlight: Envinate (2024)

We firmly believe that decades from now we will look back at the last ten years in wine and credit four friends, who met in winemaking school, with single-handedly changing the trajectory of Spanish wine.

To our longtime supporters, today's offering will be familiar as we have featured the wines of Envínate with almost every new vintage's release. But our love and admiration for these wines only grows each year, as does the sheer joy and excitement upon receiving them in shop.

These wine's seem to become more and more scarce each year, and today's release represents the handful of bottles we've received, including a brand new white, as well as 'Margalagua', Envínate's highly acclaimed red.

Make no mistake, these are all HIGHLY LIMITED, and the opportunity to purchase ALL SIX together is very rare indeed.

'Linit' 2023 $38.99

The newest release from Envínate, 'Linit' is entirely Pardillo, an ancient variety native to the area of Almansa. Here in the hot, almost desert climate of Spain's south east, the variety thrives. These centenarian vines are planted on clay soils at high elevation, 700 meters above sea level. Harvested manually, directly pressed and fermented in concrete for two weeks then aged for 8 months in neutral barrel.

Lush and tropical, this is a bouquet of pineapple and passionfruit mixed with mineral water. The palate matches this theme, with more tropical fruit, yellow apple and a deep saline undertone. There's body and wonderful texture on the palate, though the wine is endlessly refreshing. Envínate has truly stunned us again.
'Táganan Margalagua' 2022 $89.99

A native Canary Island blend of Listan Negro, Negramoll and and a touch of Listan Blanco, ranging from 50 to 150 years old and co-planted in a single parcel, on the north side of the island. Everything is fermented using whole bunches in neutral, 500L barrels for a full month before racked into smaller French oak barrels to age for 12 months.

Unlike anything else, the nose opens with notes of black cherry, cassis, dried flowers, cured black fruits, pink peppercorns and umami-driven notes of black olives, saucisson and iron. Equally layered on the palate, the wine carries immensely deep flavors on a fresh, elegant frame. The apex of all the Envínate cuvées, 'Margalagua' is a complex, powerful and compelling example of what the Canary Islands are capable of.
'Táganan' Tinto 2021  $59.99

A Listán Negro dominated blend, sourced from a variety of parcels planted at an eye-watering 1000 meters in elevation. After manual harvest, half the grapes are de-stemmed for fermentation. The wine then goes into neutral French barriques for a full year before release.

The nose is loaded with black currant, cherry, pepper and dried rose petal. The palate's luscious berry fruit is wrapped around a tight coil of smokey, saline minerals and just-right acidity. A shop favorite, this is the first bottle to sell out every year.
'Benje' Tinto 2022  $34.99

100% Listan Prieto (aka Mission or País) from a handful of un-grafted parcels at high elevation. The grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in concrete tank. Once pressed, the wine is aged in neutral French barriques for 8 months before bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

The wine jumps from the glass with juicy red cherry, red currant, citrus peel, cracked pepper and delicate floral notes. The palate is bursting with blood orange and ruby grapefruit accented with spice and a touch of saline minerality. We love this with a slight chill and spicy foods.
'Lousas' 2022  $48.99

This is Spain's answer to Burgundy. A Mencía dominant blend from select parcels grown on extremely steep, terraced vineyards in Ribeira Sacra, on Spain's Atlantic coast. Everything is hand-harvested and fermented using whole bunches before being transferred to used Burgundy barrels where it ages for 11 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Deep and baritone, it has the tightrope balance of elegance and rusticity you get in great Burgundy. A beautiful nose of violet, rose, black cherry, pomegranate, cracked black pepper and ceylon cinnamon. The deeply concentrated palate delivers more red fruit, elegant floral notes and spice with grace and extreme detail. You taste each component separately yet they all fit together seamlessly. Truly one of the world's great red wines.
'Albahra' Chingao 2023 $36.99

These vineyards are located in Almansa at the southeastern tip of Castilla-La Mancha. 100% Garnacha Tintorera sourced from the highest and oldest vines in the area. All grapes are hand-harvested and fermented using 80% whole cluster, then aged in concrete for eight months before bottling.

A richer, deeper fruit profile with plum and blackberry, followed by licorice, spice and earthy notes. The mouth filling palate is full of ripe fruit and dusty tannins but as is typical of Envínate, there's a lively, refreshing acidity to the wine. Absolutely delicious, as complex as it is quaffable.
Envínate is a quartet of Spanish friends and old schoolmates making world-changing, earth-shatteringly beautiful wines from forgotten, often abandoned vineyards throughout Spain. With the founding concept of celebrating coastal wines and indigenous varieties, Laura Ramos, Alfonso Torrente, José Martínez, and Roberto Santana have advanced the formerly stagnant Spanish wine culture in ways never before seen. 'Their aim is to make profoundly pure and authentic wines that express the terruño of each parcel in a clear and concise manner.'
