Salena's Flavor of the Week - Schmitt 'Frei.Körper.Kultur.' Rotwein 2019 (1L)

Although today's wine is brand new to the shop, we've been seeking it out and trying to acquire it for months. It took a lot of work to get it here, but the caliber of this dazzling liter of juicy, energetic red was worth all of that effort. A wine of extraordinary value that has become our new go-to chill-able red.

This dreamy, light red is produced by one of the most interesting and innovative producers coming out of Germany's Rheinhessen region: Weingut Schmitt. This is a winery that has built a reputation in their homeland for crafting exquisite, high-quality Rieslings and thrilling white blends, all in minuscule quantities.

This wine signals a bit of a departure for Schmitt as it comes from their newest line of bright, fresh and easy-drinking wines. It still conveys their hallmark attention to detail and precise winemaking and is one of those rare bottles that's better than it has to be and an absolute joy to drink!

Bianka and Daniel Schmitt have made it their life's work to create monumental wines in a thoughtful way, putting organic and biodynamic farming at the forefront. This innovative duo's goal is to produce wines that epitomize the delicate balance and relationship between mankind and nature.

Navigating this journey together since 2012, each passing vintage brings wines even better than the year before. Each cuvée aims to embody their land, their grapes and their personalities. These are German wines with great energy and soul; you can feel it in every sip.
A field blend of Merlot, St. Laurent, Portugieser, Blaufränkisch and Pinot Noir. Manually harvested, de-stemmed and fermented spontaneously with native yeast. Aged in 50 year-old, 4400 litre oak barrels. Bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

A harmonious red full of verve. Packed with black cherry, boysenberry, and plum laced with spice and woodsy, forest floor undertones. The palate brings a lively edge that is backed with a dense mineral mid palate and mouthwatering acidity. Elegant, fresh and extremely well made, this is exactly the type of red we want to drink in these hot days of summer.
