In advance of our Legendary Winemakers tasting on October 23, we are thrilled to kick off our "Producer Profile" newsletter series. In the coming weeks leading up to the event, we'll dive into the live's of each winemaker in attendance. Kicking off with none other than Arianna Occhipiniti! An inspiring woman who has changed the course of Italian wine.
Respect the wine as if it was a person.
A person who takes with him/her,
a world, a history, an atmosphere. -Arianna Occhipinti
SP68: A Road less traveled.
Arianna treats her land in Vittoria, Sicily as a true gift, one that she will eventually pass down to future inhabitants. The land is situated between the Mediterranean Sea and inland mountains, a plot consistently cooled by Iberian winds. More specifically, her vines sit alongside SP68, a County Road that marked her destiny and inspired the name of her Flagship wines. Arianna began her journey at age 16 alongside her uncle, Giusto Occhipinti – proprietor of Vittoria's famous winery, COS. Her immediate love for working in the vines and cellar drove her to attend Oenology school and jump into her own production, beginning with one hectare of abandoned vines off of SP68.
"Wines that, in their harmonies and roughness, talk about the land where they come from and also about me." –Arianna Arianna has been a rising star throughout the past decade, crafting wines that reveal the chalky minerality of Vittorian soils, the freshness of salt air and the uniqueness of native Sicilian varietals. She accepts the land and the grapes as they are, and treats them with respect. In the vineyard, the farming is biodynamic and there is zero irrigation despite the hot Sicilian sun. In the cellar, grape juice and wine are solely moved by gravity (not a pump in sight), only native yeasts are used, and none of the wines see new oak. Join us Wednesday evening, October 23, to meet Arianna in-shop and chat about her approach AND product in-person.
