Ah, Beaujolais and Fall, like Muscadet and oysters, a perfect match. Our love affair with Gamay is 24/7, 365, but when the temps take a dip is when we really CRAVE it! This is when most of the new vintages are released, and the lighter ethereal reds pair wonderfully with the crisp chill of Autumn. Gamay from Beaujolais is the equivalent to a 'pumpkin spice latte' as far as we are concerned; and the former is our drink of choice.
We have chosen five of our current (and longtime) favorites, for a dynamic exploration of a region too often painted with broad stroke characterizations. Beaujolais Nouveau is a thing of the past. It's time to discover the deeper, more refined side to this fascinating region.
Domaine de la Grand'Cour, Lieu-dit 'Champagne' Fleurie, FR 2018 $49.99
Jean-Louis Dutraive made his mark in Beaujolais as a pioneer of organic viticulture. Now joined by his son, Justin, the domaine is producing some of the most age-worthy Beaujolais Crus to date. Boasting floral aromatics, the palate on this single vineyard is an enchanting mixture of exotic spices, supple red fruit and crunchy minerals. One of the greatest and rarest wines in France!
Justin is the oldest son of iconic Jean-Louis Dutraive. He returned to work the family estate after internships with Beaujolais legends Jean Foillard and Julie Baligny. With a desire to make wine on his own, he leased this small plot just outside Fleurie and converted it to organic. This Gamay definitely boasts those elegant characteristics. Earthy aromas entwined with spice and flowers. The palate is deep, dominated by spicy dark red fruit and mineral freshness. You'll find a few empties on our Thanksgiving table!
Sébastien and Charlotte Congretel named their 2.5 hectare Domaine L’Épicurieux after the Greek philosopher Epicurus, who taught that the object of life is balanced pleasure derived from tranquility and harmony. Not surprisingly, this is a very apt description for their balanced and highly pleasurable Beaujolais. Hailing from little-known Régnié this wine is filled with black cherry, blueberry and hint of dusty earth.
Marcel Lapierre, Morgon, FR 2018 $37.99
Marcel Lapierre, the leading man in the natural wine movement of Beaujolais, and the one that stole our hearts. Lapierre's wines are all about elegance. Delicate red fruits dance with a refreshing mineral note. Effortless and incredibly easy drinking, without lacking in concentration of flavor or complexity. A softer, more sensual side of Morgon.
This is Clos de la Roilette in disguise and WE LOVE THIS PRODUCER. Every year we buy all of the bottles we can get our hands on of each of their cuvées. Bordering the Moulin-à -Vent cru, the core wines here are atypical for Fleurie. This cuvée comes from two sites that are rich in granite soils, producing a with bright, wild red berries and floral aromas. A substantive palate that couldn't be mistaken for anyone but Clos de la Roilette.
