Eastern European Revival (09.20.19)

One of the zillion reasons we love wine so much is the endless discovery. Everyday we're hit with something new. Eastern Europe is one of those new fascinations. These regions have been in the wine growing game for hundreds of years, with a history of winemaking dating back to pre-Roman times. However, after a devastating blow during the 'Thirty Years' War,' the wines from this part of the world were almost completely forgotten; that is until now.

In recent years, wines from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria are making a valiant comeback, and rightfully so. Boasting elegance, depth, complexity and energy, these wines are alluring and majestic and we are thrilled to have such a wide variety here in the shop! "Czech" (eek!) out a few of our current favorites:

Strekov 1075 'Rizling' Slovakia 2017 $34.99

Zsolt Sütó farms is a mere 12 hectares in the village of Strekov, for which this wine is named. Ponds and marshland intermingle with the vines, creating a unique microclimate and soil composition. Slight skin-contact and no filtration make this a Riesling like no other on Earth. You're not in Germany anymore! Racy, tart, and bone-dry, filled with citrus zest and a strong mineral backbone, this begs for a meal of fresh fish and veggies.

Strekov 1075 'Fred #3' Slovakia NV  $29.99

Another stunner from Sütó, 'Fred #3' is a blend of two native Slovakian varietals: Alibernet  packs the punch of juicy, crunchy red berries while the Dunaj  brings succulent dark fruit, earthy aromas and silky tannins. Spicy, fresh, complex and totally drinkable, the crown cap closure tells you this wine is meant to be enjoyed young; a true table wine that will win over the hearts of everyone in the crowd.

Milan Nestarec 'Forks and Knives' Czech Republic 2016 $34.99

Milan Nestarec has quickly become a highly regarded winemaker in the Czech Republic and you will quickly see why in this bottle of Pinot Noir. With his playful labels and cheeky Cuveé names, it's evident that he does not take himself too seriously, but this wine is no joke! Elegant, complex, and seductive, this Pinot Noir blew us away. Whole cluster fermentation leads to an elevated yet dark, juicy red fruit core, further enhanced by spice and earth notes. Deceptively complex and serious, this wine is super fun to drink!

Milan Nestarec '99 Problems but bitch ain't one' Czech Republic 2017 $36.99

Sometimes life can get the best of us, as our day-to-day can easily be consumed with work stresses, endless errands and family commitments. This is a wine that will stop you dead in your tracks and bring you back to the pleasures of living. Zippy, juicy berries burst over your palate, dancing with black pepper and crushed purple flowers. We promise no matter what you have going on in your life, this wine will be sure to add a little joy. Think of it as a solution to all of your problems!

Dobra Vinice 'Creme de Parc National' Czech Republic 2017 $33.99

Petr Nejedlik is a pioneer of natural winemaking in Moravia. His vines are located in the heart of a pristine National Park, grown (truly) in the middle of nowhere. This wine is a direct reflection of its place: crystalline, pure, fizzy and immensely refreshing. Coming from quartz, granite and gneiss soils, this mineral driven Pet Nat is a dazzlingly clean sparkler. A perfect thirst-quencher for a fall afternoon Tailgate or beach picnic!
