Duplessis 'Montmains' 1er Cru, Chablis 2015 A Rare Trifecta
Legendary wines aren't made every vintage. There are a dizzying array of factors that must go right in order for a winemaker to craft something truly special. However, about once a decade, the stars align and all facets fall into place. The result is a wine from a certain vintage that even outshines itself.
Lilian Duplessis captured lightning in a bottle in 2015. This wine is the ultimate combination of exalted terroir, a perfect vintage, and expert, historic winemaking. A once a decade wine where the three most important factors all came together to make a wine for the ages.
Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2015 Gerard Duplessis 'Montmains' 1er Cru Chablis in South Carolina!
I also pulled the trigger on the spectacular 2017 'Montée de Tonnerre' 1er Cru! Another incredible site and vintage! Both available today!
Founded in 1895, Lilian Duplessis is the fifth generation to take the reins at this family-run estate. Shortly after succeeding his father Gérard in 1999, he set out to convert their land to one of the few organic wineries in Chablis. An appellation where industrial farming is commonplace. With vineyards solely within Chablis, Duplessis lives, eats and breaths Chardonnay.
All fermentations are done with indigenous yeasts and with only a touch of sulfur at bottling. These are some of the purest, most terroir-driven wines in all of Burgundy.
The Montmains vineyards lies on the opposite side of the Siene river from Chablis' Grand Crus. Classic chalk and limestone soils with a bit of clay, giving the wine a touch of power. Aged for over two years at the winery, a portion in used Burgundy barrels.
A ripe and vibrant nose, just starting to reveal itself. Meyer lemon, white flowers and orchard fruit explode from the glass. The palate is full of crisp yellow apple balanced by potent, salty minerals and wonderful chalky texture. Concentrated and long, this wine is an all time classic.
Montée de Tonnerre is arguably Chablis' top site, in some vintages (such as this one!) surpassing even the Grand Crus. From 5 small parcels with Southeast exposure and clay heavy soils. It spends six months in used barrels before release. One of the best wines of the vintage.
Classic, restrained nose of herbs, lime zest, flinty smoke, and crabapples. The palate shows heaps of minerality with a distinct saline character. An impressive wine that will continue to evolve.
