A MONARCH EXCLUSIVE
2016 Domaine des Ardoisières 'Argile' Rouge
It's just past Memorial Day here in Charleston, and the summer heat and omnipotent humidity has already descended upon us with their mighty weight. Barolo's short lived window has closed (sadly!), and I'm now reaching for wines to cool my core and satiate my thirsty palate.
Enter Domaine des Ardoisières, a minuscule winery tucked in the shadow of Mt. Blanc. Here, in the far reaches of the French Alps come wines with light, bright and refreshing frames. They posses a purity of fruit coupled with high elevation acidity lending these wines a distinct subtly not dissimilar to the great wines of Burgundy. Cool and refreshing, like a mountain stream.
This summer, don't pigeon hole yourself into glass after glass of rosé! After all, what to drink with the sizzling skirt steak and Chimichurri you just pulled off the grill?
Your summer's perfect wine is here and Monarch is the only place in SC to get your bottles! After all, what BETTER to drink with the sizzling skirt steak and Chimichurri you just pulled off the grill?
"Drinking these wines from the side of Mont Blanc is like tasting freshly squeezed juice running off a glacier."
Just south of the Jura lies the tiny mountain appellation of Savoie, near the Swiss border. It's here where Domaine des Aroisières was born, Mt. Blanc towering overhead from all angles of the estate. Although its vineyards had originally been planted by Romans, it took a passionate group of forward thinkers to clear the derelict plot in 1998, and begin piecing the steep terraces back together to create the domaine.
Since 2005 Champagne native Brice Omont has taken over the winemaking and now Ardoisières is considered one of the most exciting wineries in France. It consists of a mere 17 acres of vineyards planted on steep, rocky slopes. Five different cuvées are produced (three white, two red) from two single vineyards: Cevins and St. Pierre de Soucy. Both planted to the area’s native varieties: Altesse, Jacquère, Mondeuse, Gamay and Persan. All grown biodynamically since their inception.
Argile Rouge is the domaine's flagship red, comprised of 80% Gamay and 20% Persan, fermented with native yeasts. The wine then spends nine months in three to five year-old barrels before bottling.
It opens with a touch of smoke on the nose followed by red raspberry compote, pomegranate, and a hint of rhubarb. The palate it is lean and mineral driven with a lip-smacking acidity. Just so incredibly pure!
