I've been waiting many years for these bottles to arrive in shop. Back when travel was done with ease, I had the privilege of visiting, tasting, and drinking(!) many great wines in beautiful settings. Of course, some wines made a bigger impression than others, lodging themselves in my memory. I just couldn't stop thinking about them. These were bottles so distinct and beautiful that I found myself day dreaming about them years later.

I remember exactly where I was, who I was with, even what time it was when I first tasted today's wine. It struck me profoundly, and I've been chasing it ever since.

Sourced from an ultra-steep plot originally planted by monks, high in the French Alpine region of the Savoie. A vineyard so precariously steep it had been neglected for years, deemed too hard to work and aptly named
'Coteau de La Mort' or 'Hillside of Death.' The result is a wine that evokes its' terrain perfectly and beautifully, with dark mountain berries and an Alpine woodsiness that can only be tasted to be believed.

Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2017 Domaine des Côtes Rousses 'Coteau de La Mort' Modeuse in South Carolina!

Founded in 2011, Domaine des Côtes Rousses is a tiny 5 hectare operation founded by Nicolas Ferrand. All of the vineyard plots are south facing at an altitude of 350 to 580 meters and are planted at a density of 10,000 plants per hectare. Nicolas is a firm believer that low yields are key for quality and keeps yields that are often just half of what the appellation authorizes.

With slopes that can reach up to 45 degree inclines, Ferrand and his team do most of the vineyard work by hand, working the soils with a horse on the lower lying plots. His wines are singular and authentic, revealing his unique home with clarity and precision.
100% Mondeuse farmed biodynamically. Hand harvested whole-bunches are fermented with ambient yeast. Raised in large, used French oak barrels for 10 months before being bottled un-fined and unfiltered.

A fragrant bouquet of red berries, dried roses, lavender, clove, pepper, pine needles and eucalyptus. On the palate, juicy blackberry, plum, cranberry and tart cherry are buttressed by a dense mid-palate minerality and earthy base notes. There's a mountain freshness that lingers throughout. A great, GREAT wine that's one of a kind.
