A MONARCH EXCLUSIVE
2017 Eric Texier, Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc
The world of white wine has veered in one direction over the past few years. It seems like almost every one follows the same formula as of late: bright, young, fresh. Now don't get me wrong: this is no rant against that style as I LOVE wines with these textures and flavors. But today's wine harkens back to the old school, especially for its region. It's a wine that doesn't try and hide from the natural beauty of its characteristics. It doesn't try and be something it isn't. It's a true and authentic wine made by a man who is unapologetically those things. Historic wines like this shouldn't disappear.
Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2017 Eric Texier, Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc in South Carolina!
Those of you who had a chance to meet Eric Texier at the Louis/Dressner tasting last year probably learned quickly that he doesn't mince words. Eric is as direct and forthright with his opinions as they come. It's no surprise then, that this is exactly how he makes his wines.
Eric Texier made the leap from nuclear engineer to winemaker in the early 1990s. With no family background in wine, he began reading, studying, and visiting traditional winemakers and sustainable farms around the world. He developed a passion for wine. His winemaking is very old and traditional, inspired by an older generation of Rhône producers.
He is now, undoubtably, one of the most important figures in the world of wine. Producing a range of wines farmed organically or biodynamically from 30 plots in the Rhône and Macon.
A blend of 50% Bourbolenc and 50% Clairette from a vineyard 1km away from the Rhône River. The site is flat and stony with cool, clay based soils over limestone. Always harvested early to preserve freshness. The fruit is direct-pressed in whole clusters and fermentation is in old barrels with native yeasts and without sulfur.
Shows complex aromas of almond, dried pear, wet stone, white flowers and herbs. The palate is intense and mineral with fabulous length, showing pear, green apple, anise, white pepper and stone flavors. TINY production.
