A MONARCH EXCLUSIVE
2018 Domaine du Pelican 'Bérangères' Trousseau
I am so proud and excited to share today's offer with you! So many things I love packed into one bottle. A red wine made by legendary Burgundian winemaker, Guillaume d'Angerville, from vines planted by one of the Jura's greatest, Jacques Puffeney - retired since 2014.
This is a first for us! Our premier Exclusive from a region I love: the JURA. Maybe it's the proximity to Burgundy or the elegance and precision of the wines. Maybe it's because both regions pack so much flavor and nuance into such a lithe frame, transmitting place with clarity and drive found only in a handful of regions. These are wines I crave to drink and crave to learn more about.
Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of this inaugural release from Domaine du Pelican wine in South Carolina!
Those of you who are Burgundy fanatics will be familiar with the name Marquis d'Angerville, an historic estate at the top of red Burgundy's hierarchy. His young project in the Jura, Domaine du Pelican, was born from a bottle of wine.
"I tasted this bottle blind in a restaurant in Paris that I often go to. I always tell the sommelier to give me something blind and the only rule is that it has to be outside Burgundy. When he brought me this wine, I said, 'You forgot the rule, you brought me a wine from Burgundy.' And he said, 'I am afraid you're wrong.'" - Guillaume d’Angerville
That bottle, as you might have guessed, was from the Jura, and proved to be the catalyst in Guillaume's quest to making world-class wine from this fascinating place.
Les Bérangères is a vineyard that Jacques Puffeney made famous. Puffeney’s Bérangères was the benchmark example of the grape, and it aged beautifully. Upon Puffeney’s retirement in 2014, d’Angerville assumed ownership of Puffeney’s vineyard holdings.
When you combine this impressive terroir with d’Angerville’s incredibly conscientious and sensitive winemaking, the results are deeply impressive.
The debut vintage! The alluvial soils in Béranger are just stony enough to allow for good drainage, particularly beneficial for Trousseau (a light yet savory red grape). The vines are over 50 years old and have a southwest exposition, ensuring perfect ripeness. The wine is aged in used oak barrels.
Beautiful and complex aromatics of dark fruits, spice, forest floor, and earth. The palate is concentrated with just enough structure to keep all that flavor elevated yet accessible. A legend is born!
