A MONARCH EXCLUSIVE
FABIO GEA is the real deal...and so are his wines
I'm a conflicted wine lover. My education is rooted in the classic wines of Europe, wines of tradition which haven't changed for generations. I love these wines and always will.
But my heart is also touched by wines which push boundaries, made by winemakers that think outside the box to create exciting, new styles. Wines that give me a sense of discovery and rebirth.
For me to really fall for a wine it must be true, genuine, authentic, REAL. The wines of Fabio Gea are ALL of these things. Some are traditional, while others novel and fresh. But they are always true to the Piedmont vineyards from which they're grown.
I'm proud to offer THE ONLY BOTTLES OF FABIO GEA in South Carolina!
Fabio Gea is one of the funniest, craziest, and most provocative winemakers in Italy today. He makes delicious wines from small parcels in Barbaresco.
The whole enterprise is a few rows of Nebbiolo inside and outside of the Barbaresco designation, as well as small parcels of Dolcetto, Grignolino and Barbera - less than 1 hectare in total. To put that in perspective, if you put all of his land together it wouldn't even cover the field in Yankee Stadium.
All vineyard work is done by hand, with minimal treatments. In the cellar, he uses older barrels, glass and stainless steel. Total production is just 5,000 bottles a year of 6-7 different wines. Some wines are traditional, others definitely outside-the-box.
No matter the style or variety, ALL his wines are gorgeous, clean, and natural with the right balance of muscle and finesse. I've found few wines as singular, complex, and frankly, just perfectly delicious.
'Black Grin' 2018 $49.99
100% Gringolino. Total production is a mere 1109 bottles, which is hand written on each label, as is the case with all his bottles. This is Fabio's lightest wine showing tart red fruits, crisp acidity and a pinch of cracked pepper. It really shines with a slight chill and some sliced prosciutto.
'Cul Otte' 2018 $59.99
100% Nebbiolo. Fermented and aged in handmade porcelain anfora, which Fabio refers to as 'toilets'! The wine is pure, clean and supremely elegant. Gorgeous, lifted raspberry fruit gives way to a succulent palate filled with rosehip, earth and iron minerality. This de-classified Barbaresco is a can't miss.
Barbera d'Alba 'Palma' 2016 $64.99
From vines located in and around Barbaresco and aged partially in barrel and porcelain. The nose is bright, with spicy and fresh dark forest fruit. The palate is also focused and vibrant, with black cherry, dried herbs, and a hint of salty, dark minerality. Pasta's perfect match.
Barbaresco 'Notu Seguvia Le Gocce d'Acqua' 2015 $99.99
The crown jewel. This 100% Nebbiolo spends two years in the most unique barrels in all of wine. Instead of toasting the inside of these barrels, he vaporizes them using hot volcanic rocks. Sort of like a hot sauna for the wood. This process gives the wine a crystalline freshness and clarity not found in other Barbaresco. It's an edgy, dynamic wine, showing ripe fruit balanced by great lift and transparency. It's a stand out and it’s exciting to drink!
