50% Nerello Mascalese, 20% Grenache, 30% Grecanico, Carricante and Coda di Volpe grown on a half-hectare parcel of ungrafted (hence 'piede franco' on label), 80-100 year old bush vines. Located more than 1000 meters above sea level. The bunches are hand-harvested, partly de-stemmed, co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur. The wine is aged for 9 months in concrete and used oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration. Only 2000 bottles produced in 2019.
The wine opens with an unmatched purity of red fruit, cherry and raspberry followed by spice and heady earth tones. The palate is substantial and deeply mineral, yet exquisitely balanced with astonishing delicacy, cleansing acidity and plush tannins. Wonderful now, but will reward you with a few years of bottle age.
