I remember the exact moment that I first tasted a wine from Mt. Etna. It was just before opening Morandi and I had been invited to a tasting at Barbuto to sample the newest releases from Italy. The wines were your usual suspects: current vintage Barolo and Brunello. But by far, the standouts of the event were these new wines from Sicily. I had never tasted anything like them before.

In the cab back to our office, my mentor and I couldn't stop talking about how exciting these wines were. His description of summed it up perfectly:
"the perfect marriage of Barolo and Burgundy." They capture the soulful, earthy, heady aromas typical of Barolo, but are balanced by a silky Burgundian elegance. It is a descriptor I have used ever since.

Today's wine, from a north-facing single vineyard, is the pinnacle of Etna for me. It embodies everything I love about this region in a way that no other wine has. It is deeply concentrated, with layers of flavor, yet incredibly graceful and refined.

Stop me if you've heard this before. A dynamic, young Spaniard voyages to Italy to work under the great Arianna Occhipinti. He parlays that into a job at one of Mt. Etna's most high-profile wineries. He saves his Lira...eh...Euro to lease a few hectares of vines on the north face of Mt. Etna and in his spare time manages to make groundbreaking wines.

Eduardo Acosta tends 8 small parcels at elevations ranging from 750 to 950 meters above sea level (it snows here!). Grown on soils rich in volcanic ash, the vines average 45-100 years in age. They are hand-tended without chemicals or fertilizers and always hand-harvested. Up until the 2017 vintage, the grapes were harvested and then trucked to Arianna Occhipinti’s estate in Vittoria but in 2018, Eduardo was able to convert a small Etna garage into a winery, where he converts this incredible landscape into beautiful wines. Lucky us that we get to drink them!
50% Nerello Mascalese, 20% Grenache, 30% Grecanico, Carricante and Coda di Volpe grown on a half-hectare parcel of ungrafted (hence 'piede franco' on label), 80-100 year old bush vines. Located more than 1000 meters above sea level. The bunches are hand-harvested, partly de-stemmed, co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur. The wine is aged for 9 months in concrete and used oak barrels, bottled without fining or filtration. Only 2000 bottles produced in 2019.

The wine opens with an unmatched purity of red fruit, cherry and raspberry followed by spice and heady earth tones. The palate is substantial and deeply mineral, yet exquisitely balanced with astonishing delicacy, cleansing acidity and plush tannins. Wonderful now, but will reward you with a few years of bottle age.
