A MONARCH EXCLUSIVE
Claudio Vio The Mediterranean...in your glass.
It's easy to be dismissive of Italian white wines. I'm guilty of it. The country's legendary reputation certainly rests on the shoulders of its' monumental and plentiful reds. But to do so would deny ourselves some of the world's most distinctive and DELICIOUS white wines.
There are few more captivating wines than those of Claudio Vio, not just in Italy, but anywhere in the world. My first taste brought me back to the first time I tried Domaine de la Pépière's Muscadet, as theyboth transmit their land so clearly and so directly. When you drink Claudio's wines you experience something so singular, so unique, there is no equal.
If you've never had Vermentino or Pigato, I love and recommend them with South Carolina's signature dish, Shrimp & Grits. Here's a favorite recipe of mine. Try it for yourself, it's an incredible flavor combination.
Today, I'm proud to offer the only bottles of 2019 Claudio Vio Vermentino AND 2019 Claudio Vio Pigato in South Carolina!
Liguria, the Italian Riviera. A moon shaped sliver of land perched against the Mediterranean. Home to some of the steepest, most rugged vineyards in Europe. It's here, 300 meters above the sea that Ettore and Natalina Vio (Claudio's parents) planted vines and olive trees, dispersed amongst a patchwork of terraced vineyards and totaling a whopping 2 hectares.
Everything is done by hand, as the vineyards are simply too steep for anything else. Fermentations are with natural yeasts in stainless steel. Everything is done to preserve the naturally brisk, mineral quality inherent in the vines. It is truly as if the sea is captured in each grape cluster.
Vermentino 2019 $29.99
Liguria's flagship wine. Hand-harvested from terraced vineyards totaling less than 2 hectares. Clusters are de-stemmed and the skins are left to macerate with the must for 36 hours. Aged for 6 months in stainless steel and then an additional 2 months in bottle before release.
Fresh, clean and bright with green citrus, fresh herbs, white flowers and crushed oyster shells. The palate is taut and brisk with incredible mid-palate saline minerality.
Pigato 2019 $29.99
Pigato is Vermentino's fraternal twin, but Ligurian growers disagree. The grapes certainly don’t look the same in the vineyard, and the resulting wines taste different, even when vinified the same, which they are in this case.
Vibrant and energetic with crisp orchard fruits: white peach, green apple and quince. The palate is a touch juicier than the Vermentino, but still retains the stunning salty minerals that make these wines so special. Makes for a fascinating study in terroir!
