The truly great wines of the world take time. They need years and years of bottle age to clearly express their magnificence. While true, these statements neglect the full picture, and today's offer is a shining example of a top-notch wine you can drink TONIGHT. As I've said before, one of my great joys is seeking out the lesser known, the smaller production "secret" wines that over deliver. This may be my best discovery yet.
For lovers of Chenin Blanc, the wines of Domaine du Closel are at the top of the list. This domaine is known for making some of the most storied and spellbinding dry Chenins in Savennières, the Grand Cru of the Loire Valley. Today's wine hails from the tiny vineyard of Les Caillardières (one of the best parcels in the appellation), whose sandy soils combined with a warm vintage have yielded a wine that is absolutely singing right out of the gate.

Domaine du Closel dates back to the mid-15th century and is now run by the iconic Evelyne de Pontbriand, who inherited the estate from her aunt, Madame du Closel. Evelyne is meticulous, not only having converted all farming to biodymanic, but also in analyzing the soils of each parcel in order to express the subtleties of Savennière's terroir.
The appellation is a notoriously unique, intense, savory and structured expression of Chenin Blanc and Evelyne has learned from her 16 years at the helm that a minimal approach to both the farming and wine making is the most effective way to convey its essence.
100% Chenin Blanc from 35 year old vines planted on sand over schist soils. Fermented and aged in large used oak barrels for 18 months before bottling. Because the vineyard sits up high on a windy plateau, the grapes are harvested late, contributing to the wine's richness.
An effusive, concentrated nose of crisp pear, spiced apple, quince and honeysuckle. The palate is broad and powerful yet crisp and fresh with a cool rainwater-like texture and dense minerality. An impressive wine with regal stature and immediate gratification.
