If you've been following along over the past few weeks, you might be noticing a theme: world-class wines from unlikely places. These aren't wines attempting to be facsimiles of historic regions, but wines that take those celebrated grape varieties and push them to new, unique, heights.
Today's wine is the epitome of this. Take the layers of complexity and textures found in Premier Cru White Burgundy, then inject a bolt of energy and verve found only in the world's greatest German wines.
As the prices for Burgundy climb ever higher, discovering a wine like today's Chardonnay is not only eye-opening, but thrilling! A wine of this quality, made at this level, from an exceptional vintage like 2019, would cost exponentially more were it from Burgundy.
Today I am proud to offer the ONLY bottles of 2019 Koehler-Ruprecht 'Annaberg' Chardonnay in South Carolina!

Koehler-Ruprecht, an estate established in the 1700's, was brought to prominence by Bernd Phillip's fastidious and unrelenting work in the vineyards. Bernd took inspiration from his grandfather, as the winemaking done here is more akin to the 1900's than the 2000's. No irrigation or herbicides are ever used and long spontaneous fermentations occur in large, old oak barrels with extended lees contact in the cellar. Nothing is ever added nor subtracted from the wine.
Now in the hands of the hard-working and dedicated Dominik Sona, these are extremely old-school wines from an estate making only dry wines (before it was cool to do so).
100% Chardonnay from a 120 year-old south-facing vineyard comprised of sand and limestone. Organically farmed and hand harvested, the wine is aged for 10 months on its lees, untouched in large, old oak barrels.
A vivid and finely etched wine showing aromas of citrus, tart orchard fruit, flint and crushed stone. The palate is nervy; full of that aforementioned verve, with deep, salty minerals and a crisp, dry, long finish. Complex and compact, this wine is pure excitement and exactly the type of wine that I love to share with you!
