It seems that every year, we keep hearing how Portugal is going to take the US wine world by storm. With its ancient traditions and native grape varieties transmitting fascinating terroir, these are wines that everyone will be talking about. Yet, those proclamations never seem to come to fruition.
And while we do taste wonderful wines from Portugal every year, none have grabbed us quite like these! After the first sip, we knew we had found something different, and special, from this historic wine country.
Today, we're proud to offer the only bottles from Vale de Capucha in South Carolina!
Pedro Marques grew up in his family vineyards. Entranced by the restrained, mineral driven wines of central France, Pedro mimics this style with ease. His vineyards are situated a stone's throw from the beach, where the soils have a great deal of fossilized sea creatures, much like those found in Chablis. This element, along with the cooling Atlantic breezes, lend freshness and salinity to all of his wines.
Pedro has an effortless style that he describes as 'lazy,' but you would never know from the taste. With rich textures and great character, his wines are almost too easy to drink!
Certified organic since 2015, Marques is the fifth generation to take the reins at this estate, just north of Lisbon. With a precise, clean, and pure style, Pedro is the rising star in Portuguese winemaking.
2017 'Fossil' Branco $28.99
A blend of native white varieties, this is a stunning example of Pedro's winemaking. An expressive, layered white that is balanced by fresh, lemon tinged acidity. With a mineral backbone and salty finish, this wine will take you right to the coastline. The perfect summer seafood sipper.
2016 'Fossil' Tinto $28.99
This whole cluster blend of Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Syrah. The crunchy red fruits are pure, fresh and elegant. There is a smokiness that plays nicely with the bright berry aspects on the nose. Softened by the ever present salty minerals of Pedro's wines. Give it a chill, this red is light enough on its own.
2017 'Poco do Gado Gouvelo' Branco $29.99
A blend of Viosinho and Arinto, this singular wine really got to us. Green, herbal aromas jump from the glass followed by a rich texture showing fresh citrus, crunchy orchard fruits and iodine. The silky texture is backed by focused, salty minerality and a long finish. If you like white Burgundy, this wine is a must!
2018 'Castelinho' Tinto VV $29.99
From old vine Castelāo, this red wine bursts with dark, jammy fruits with notes of vanilla and coconut. Full bodied yet delicate, a truly balanced example of a terroir driven, Atlantic red wine. The cooling coast helps the grapes retain their acidity, cutting through the depth and weight of the wine. Pair with grilled steak or roasted red meat.
