Could there be a more ubiquitous wine than Côtes-du-Rhône? This vast region produces millions of gallons of wine each year. With most of them being innocuous reds guzzled in bars and bistros throughout the world.
There are a few select wineries willing to push back against this massive tide of commercial, soul-less wines. And even within those very few, there are even less that really stand out, that stick with you long after the bottle is finished. Domaine Gramenon is one of these exceptions.
These are wines I adore. They left their mark on me, as I can still remember the first bottle I ever tasted. These are not only some of the best Côtes du Rhônes, but some of the best red wines in all of France.
Michèle Aubèry-Laurent's story is remarkable. She and her husband created this small domaine in the northern reaches of the southern Rhône thirty years ago. They set out to make wines with as little human manipulation as possible. In 1999 her husband was killed in a tragic accident. Michèle was suddenly on her own with their three children, vineyards, and the winery.
Devastated but determined, Michèle boldly picked up and moved forward. Over the years Michèle has catapulted Domaine Gramenon to cult wine status. Today she works the vines with her talented son, Maxime François. They farm using organic and biodynamic practices, with a strong non-interventionist stance in the cellars.
Gramenon’s wines are alive, expressive, and difficult to stop drinking!
'Poignée de Raisins' Côtes du Rhône 2019 $29.99
A fresh, youthful Grenache. Hand-harvested, native yeast fermentation, aged without any new oak, and only negligible doses of sulfur added at bottling. Bright red and black fruits mingle with a touch of spice and dried herbs. The palate is fresh, crisp with juicy berry fruit and cleansing acidity. We love it with a slight chill and burgers on the grill.
'La Belle Sortie' Côtes du Rhône 2019 $29.99
A brand new release for the domaine. Mostly Grenache with Syrah, from high altitude vines on limestone soils. Native yeast fermented in concrete vats. An effusive nose of cherries, raspberries, violets and herbs de Provençe. A detailed palate packs concentrated fruit in a light, fresh frame. A Côtes du Rhône with elegance.
'Sierra du Sud' Côtes du Rhône 2019 $39.99
100% Syrah, unlike most Côtes du Rhônes. Similar to its Northern Rhone counterparts, yet with a bit more exuberance. Aged in used oak. Dark, deep aromas of blackberry, currant smoke and tea. The palate is dense yet not heavy with wonderful acidity and soft tannins offering support. A fascinating expression of one of our favorite varieties.
