These three new arrivals caught us off guard. Not only are they delicious–eye-widening, "WOW" delicious–but each one deviates from their stylistic norm. In short, these are wines you would't expect. But we're VERY pleasantly surprised, and you will be too!
We're talking blush-pink bubbles made from the typically mass-produced Pinot Grigio grape; an Etna rosato made from grapes grown on the HIGHEST plot in all of Europe; and a fresh, highly complex, carbonic rouge from the sunny south of France.
Furlani 'Macerato' Trentino, IT NV $31.99
You'd think a red grape was responsible for the blush-pink tint of these Alpine bubbles. But we actually owe this irresistible color (and taste!) to none other than PINOT GRIGIO! Due to its zippy freshness, this grape pops up all over the place: Italy, Germany, France and the US, among many others. While quality and character are often sacrificed in favor of mass-production (sorry for the bad rap, PG!), Cantina Furlani's Pinot Grigio bubbles are unlike any other. The grapes were grown on tiny schist and granite plots at an altitude of 700+ meters high in the Dolomites. The 10-days of skin contact lends its glorious pink hue, while the palate tastes of juicy grapefruit, sour apples and alpine herbs. Unfined, unfiltered, no added SO2. PURE PINOT GRIGIO!
I Vigneri di Salvo Foti 'Vinudilice' Etna, IT 2017 $44.99
We're hope you're not too tired of summer's quintessential pink drink just yet, because you could drink this volcanic rosé all day. Salvo Foti's vines are on Sicily's majestic Mt.Etna, and the Grenache (plus a few other native varietals) for this electric-pink rosato come from a single plot 1300+ meters above sea level. It's called Vigna Bosco, and as far as anyone knows, it's the highest vineyard in ALL OF EUROPE. Each year, Foti vinifies all the grapes together and sees how the wine comes out: full of delicious surprises. Notes of tart cherries, lavender and orange peel are followed by a dense and concentrated palate with a mineral-tinged finish. DRINK ETNA ROSÉ!
You'd think a red wine from sunny southern France would't be so fitting for a steamy summer day in Charleston. But after one taste, there's no question that Domaine YoYo's 'KM 31' is exactly what we need in the midst of the Lowcountry heat. Here's why: this sensual rouge is a blend of 80% WHITE grapes (Grenache Gris), plus Grenache Noir and Carignan. The 100+ year-old vines planted on stony soils and black shale lend this wine complex mineral layers, while the semi-carbonic vinification method lends it a playful, yet pure fruit character. This is a rare and remarkable red – slightly chill and savor every sip while you fire up the grill (with a glass in hand, of course).
