2016 Roches Neuves 'Franc de Pied'
To put the specialness of this offer in perspective, a short history of wine in Europe, if I may:
During the late 19th Century, almost every single grapevine was destroyed by Phylloxera, a bug that feeds on the roots and leaves of grapevines. Some estimates hold that between two-thirds and nine-tenths of all European vineyards were destroyed! To combat the epidemic vines were grafted on to American rootstocks, which are Phylloxera-resistant.
Enter today's offer, a wine who's vines have never been grafted on to American rootstock. A truly French wine, un-grafted and un-matched!
Thierry Germain relocated to the Loire from Bordeaux in the early 1990s, and soon fell under the influence of his spiritual father, Charly Foucault of Clos Rougeard. He would ultimately convert Domaine des Roches Neuves to biodynamic viticulture, which was the equivalent of his wine epiphany. Listening and observing his plants, allowing them to guide him, revolutionized his way of thinking. His total dedication to site specific wines produced from Cabernet Franc (and Chenin Blanc), have produced some of the most exciting wines in the Loire Valley today!
Pristine fruit is whole-cluster fermented and aged in used large (1200L) barrels for one year.
One of the most profound expressions of Cabernet Franc we've ever had. The 2016 soars with spice, flowers, earth and dark fruits, all effortlessly woven together, but there is a textural dimension, length and precision that sets this Cab Franc apart from all others. A delicate, subtle, floral and herb-tinged finish puts the perfect bow on this complete package.
