Some of you may have heard this story before. I tend to wax poetic about a particular bottle every time we receive our allocation. This bottle is Jean Foillard's Morgon 'Cote du Py.'
I was a young buck hauling cases for pennies in the cavernous basement cellars of NYC's Balthazar. As supplementary compensation for my grunt-work, the wine director (and mentor) allowed me to sit in on all restaurant and distributor tastings. Every day we would taste dozens of French wines vying for a spot on the coveted wine list, but I had yet to experience that AH-HA moment, that taste that stops time and puts everything in perspective.
That moment came the day I tasted 2002 Foillard, Morgon 'Cote du Py.' A wine that made me fall in love with wine. I had no idea wine could make me feel like that wine did!
Today's wine evokes those same emotions. A Morgon cut from the same cloth, yet made by one of Beaujolais' rising stars. I'm thrilled to offer the only case of Kevin Descombes, Morgon 'Vieilles Vignes' 2016 in South Carolina.
A the ripe old age of 21, Kevin produced his first vintage in 2013. He currently rents 1.15 hectares within the Beaujolais appellation along with 1.6 hectares of Morgon from a retired vigneron who'd previously leased the vines to his father Georges, a legendary figure in his own right, instrumental in the resurgence of Beaujolais. In addition, Kevin purchased 1.2 hectares of 85 year old Morgon vines in 2013, which produce this Vieilles Vignes.
Kevin has also adopted much of his father’s method and philosophy as a winemaker. Everything is certified organic, and only native yeasts and minimal sulfur are used.
True old-vine Gamay grown on steep granitic slopes. Classic Beaujolais winemaking, fermentation is semi-carbonic with whole bunches and extended aging in used Burgundy barrels. A rare, late release Morgon.
The nose jumps from the glass with black cherries, plums, spice, soil, and woodsmoke. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite seriously structured, with a sappy core, and great mineral drive. The finish is long and firm with plenty of tanninsand grip. The finest Gamay I've tasted in quite some time.
I’m proud to offer the only bottles of 2016 Kevin Descombes, Morgon 'Vieilles Vignes' in South Carolina!
