There is no better white wine for this time of year than Chenin Blanc. The wine has both textural richness AND bright acidity, allowing it to pierce through rich roasted meats and vegetables. If you are planning to BYOB to an Oyster Roast, you MUST bring a bottle of Chenin Blanc.
Oilvier Lejeune (as his name suggests) is a young and incredibly talented winemaker in France's Loire Valley, the ancestral home of Chenin Blanc. He has been mentored by the region's 2 most revered winemakers, Angeli and Leroy. These two names are revered by Chenin freaks (like me!). Both gentlemen make wines of incredible depth and age-ability, however, in minute quantities. Olivier Lejeune follows in their footsteps.
2018 is Olivier's SECOND vintage of Poïesis, and I'm already fighting and clamoring for as much as I can get. Needless to say, his inaugural debut took the wine world by storm. He's taken this vintage to new heights.
In the cellar, Olivier's goal is to reduce the number of filters between the fruit and wine. Once the Chenin is pressed, fermentation commences spontaneously. The wine is then transferred to neutral barrels by gravity and left untouched for 12 months before bottling.
The 2018 Poïesis is crystalline, pure, and fresh. Delicate and chiseled with aromas of lemon, honeysuckle, and crushed stone. The palate is tightly coiled and absolutely brimming with energy. A thrilling second act full of crisp citrus, green pear, and deep, long minerality.
