Certain wines made me fall in love with wine. They were wines that dilated my pupils and took my breath away. They showed me wine was so much more than just a beverage. I couldn't help it, I needed to know more!
Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet was one of those wines. These are wines with a clear and direct link to place. Wines of pure terroir.
Today I'm honored to be writing about Domaine de la Pépière. An undoubtedly impressive range, including the age worthy 'Briords' (available in magnums too!), which I believe to be one of wine's greatest values. I've had examples dating to the early 80's!
"From our beginnings, our only goal has been to express Muscadet’s terroir under all its different guises." -Marc Olivier
Muscadet's Living Legend
Situated in the village of Maisdon-sur-Sèvre, in France's Loire Valley, Domaine de la Pépière's Marc Olivier has been producing stunning wines for nearly 40 years. The domaine is named for the small village of La Pépière, where Marc was born and raised. La Pépière has its root in the word pépie, meaning thirst, a nod to the vibrant and thirst quenching wines that Olivier has dedicated his life to making.
The wines of Domaine de la Pépière exemplify Olivier's passion for his land. Terroir driven, briny and astoundingly pure, each bottle will transport you directly to the heart of his homeland, where the Loire River meets the Atlantic.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine 'Briords' 2019 $27.99 Magnum$55.99
Olivier's flagship wine. From a tiny plot of old vines grown in granite-rich soil. Intensely mineral driven, bone dry, and supremely elegant. Marc captures the true essence of Muscadet's terroir in this bottling. Crushed oyster shells and salinity are unwavering with hints of lemon rind and green apple skin. This is hands down one of my favorite white wines of all time.
Muscadet Sèvre et Maine 'Clisson' 2017 $29.99
This captivating Muscadet comes from terroir de Clisson, near Olivier's home village. The soil here has a high density of granite which gives a notable mineral edge to this deeply concentrated wine. A standout in the Pépière portfolio, the Clisson has a more sensual, round mouthfeel. Rich flavors of candied lemon are impeccably balanced by the ever-present, salty mineral backbone, sharp acidity and lingering finish.
Côt 'La Pépiè' 2019 $24.99
Now this is a Malbec we can get behind! A departure from the big and bold style found in the New World, here we find a lifted and brighter expression of the variety. Sourced from young vines, the nose reveals red fruit, orange citrus, pepper and a touch of graphite. The palate is light, lifted and high toned. A crisp and bright red, perfect with a slight chill.
Cabernet Franc 'La Pépiè' 2019 $24.99
Cool climate Cabernet Franc. Dark, supple fruits mingle with herbs and that classic green pepper note. Much more layered and complex than the price suggests. The palate features lip smacking ripe fruit, balanced by soft, dry, earthy tannins. Our back yard BBQ go-to this summer.
