A MONARCH EXCLUSIVE
Château Yvonne The Next Great Generation of the Loire Is Here
When I contemplate why most of you (hopefully!) read our emails, one of the main reasons would be for the insider tips. Wines and producers we feel are some of the greatest wines being produced today, yet fly under the radar.
I was introduced to the Loire's Château Yvonne just over five years ago. The wines blew me away then, and their projection to one of the top estates in the Loire Valley (and France overall) has come as no surprise. What does surprise me is their recognition outside of the wine community, has yet to catch up to the quality of the wines. The Château, after all, is the heir apparent to the legendary (and recently sold) Clos Rougeard estate.
Simply put, these are some of the greatest examples of Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc being made today. Today, I'm thrilled to offer a Château Yvonne TWO-PACK! Saumur Blanc 2018 & Saumur Champigny Rouge 2017!

Château Yvonne dates back to the 16th century and has been surrounded by vineyards since the MIDDLE AGES. Fast forward a mere 500+ years to 1997, when Yvonne and Jean-François Lamunière revitalized the abandoned vineyards with the help of Françoise Foucault of cult Clos Rougeard, one of the most sought-after and rarest domaines in all of France.
Mathieu Vallée took over in 2007 and is now producing some of the Loire's most pristine, soulful and precise wines. Organically and biodynamically farming 3 hectares of Chenin Blanc and 8 hectares of Cabernet Franc. The vines are spread out over 28 parcels within Saumur and Saumur Champigny. All vineyard work is done manually, which translates into the cave, where his minimalist approach shines: native yeast fermentation, no additions other than very little SO2, slow, naturally-occurring malolactic fermentation, minimal racking, and bottling un-fined and unfiltered.
Yvonne's production is EXTREMELY low, averaging a mere 2,000 cases per year.
Saumur Blanc 2018$44.99
100% Chenin Blanc from 3 hectares, with vines ranging from 5 to over 80 years of age. Grown biodynamically on clay and limestone soils over tuffeau, a soil as white as snow. Hand-harvested in small bins. Native yeast fermentation with no additions. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally while aging in oak, 20% of which are new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal sulfur.
Opens with crisp apple and pear which later develop into quince and honeysuckle as the wine opens up. The palate is brisk and bone-dry with immense mineral concentration and cleansing acidity. One of the world's greatest Chenins.
Saumur Champigny 2017$39.99
100% Cabernet Franc from 4 of the Domaine's remarkable parcels, totaling a single hectare in size. Farmed biodynamically on sand with clay and limestone soils over the singular tuffeau stone. Native yeast fermentation, then aged 22 months in a combination of new and used oak barriques and large foudres. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Only 6,000 bottles produced.
This is a wine with depth: a serious, elegant Cab Franc with notes of raspberry, cherry, green peppercorn and forest floor. The silky palate has unrivaled purity and length. Loire's answer to Grand Cru Burgundy.
