A MONARCH PRODUCER PROFILE
La Perdida True Spanish Originals
These are the most singular, original and fascinating wines I have ever tasted. That's no hyperbole.
Often when I taste wine, I try and compare it to something I've had before, something to give it context. When I tasted the wines of La Perdida for the first time I couldn't conjure anything, they are incomparable. The wines are unlike anything I have ever experienced before from any wine. In addition to being supremely delicious, they have a vibrancy, vitality and exuberance that is almost impossible to describe in ones' tasting notes. They feel, and taste, ALIVE!
Today, I'm thrilled to offer three new releases from Spain's enigmatic La Perdida! The ONLY bottles in South Carolina, and our nearest neighbor Georgia for that matter!

Nacho Gonzalez started his career as a Biologist, but it wasn't until he inherited a small, abandoned vineyard from his grandmother in 2012 that his interest in winemaking was sparked.
La Perdida translates to 'The Lost', a reference to the fact these wines are all from vineyards that were all, at one stage, abandoned and left to be 'found' by Nacho. The vineyards are truly surreal. He continuously nurses these gnarly, old, abandoned vines back to life and farms everything organically and mention manually. Quite a feat for any vigneron, but especially one in the cool, wet, humid, maritime climate of Galicia, a small region in Spain's Northwest corner.
Today Nacho works with a grand total of 4 hectares, and produces just 12,000 bottles a year.
Proscrito 2019 $44.99
90% Palomino Fino (a white variety), 10% Grenacha Tintorera, sourced from over 12 parcels planted between 1945 and 1960 on clay and granite soils. The wine macerates for a short 5 days before being transferred to used French oak. No added sulfur at any time.
A light, shimmering pale pink in the glass, this wine achieves a perfect balance of delicacy and flavor. Intense aromatics of crushed red berries, spice and rose petal. The palate is crisp and refreshing with tense rocky minerals and blood orange acidity. Wonderful with a slight chill to the bottle on a Spring day.
A Seara 2019$49.99
70% red varieties: Garnacha Tintorera, Mencia and Mouraton, and 30% white varieties: Doña Branca, Godello and Palomino. From a tiny plot (0.35 hectares) planted between 1950 and 1960 on granite soils in Ribeira Sacra. Picked later and riper than any other of his cuvées, the wine is aged in a combination of stainless steel and clay anfora.
Deep and opaque with an intense nose of blackberry, plum, pepper, mint and a touch of woodsmoke. The palate is densely packed, yet light and detailed with ripe red fruits and crunchy granitic minerality. Serious stuff, yet immensely drinkable.
O Poulo 2019 $49.99
Nacho's flagship and smallest production wine. 95% Grenacha Tintorera and 5% Palomino Fino from extremely old vines that yield only ONE 400L barrel. Planted on a steep granitic slope 600 meters above sea level.
A pure, concentrated and effusive nose with tons of black plum, cassis, black cherry and graphite. The palate is packed with flavor and quite expansive, offering incredible concentration and mineral depth. This could certainly benefit from cellaring.
