Spain's Grenache Revolution A country returns to its roots with a new generation of Grenache
Noble Rot Magazine, one of the best, if not THE best wine publication on the planet recently declared Spain as the world's most exciting wine country. A place where wine history is being rewritten on a daily basis.
A large part of this revolution is the revival of old-vine Garnacha hailing from Sierra de Gredos, just west of Madrid. A rugged, mountainous region where the soils are rich in granite. Over the past decade, a group of intrepid, young winemakers have dedicated themselves to rediscovering and reinvigorating the old bush-vine Garnacha here, bringing the Viños de Madrid back to its glorious origins. These are not the heavy, high-alcohol monster's of the 90's. These are singular, exquisite, elegant and pure. We have fallen hard for these wines!
This week, we're highlighting four of these revelatory, new Spanish wines. Grab them all and discover what all the excitement is about!
“We have a big, big treasure here.”
Leading the movement of fresh, precise, delicate wines are Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia of Comando G. Their deep spiritual connection with this unique terruño is encapsulated in each of these wines. All reigning from this historic region, these game-changing winemakers are humble heroes, embracing one common mission:
To capture the purity of the local old-vine Garnacha grown on the arid, granitic soils of the area.
Commando G 'La Bruja de Rozas' 2017 $29.99
Comando G’s 'village' wine, La Bruja de Rozas is sourced from several vineyards in the vicinity of Las Rozas de Puerto Real. Pure Garnacha from granitic sand (Chateau Rayas, anyone?), La Bruja is perfumed and lively with plenty of fruit and a backbone of acidity and fine tannin. A lovely, floral, wine with light, chalky mineral flavors. Chateauneuf-du-Pape's Spanish cousin.
Bodegas Marañones '30,000 Maravedíes' 2016 $24.99
From one of the founders of Commando G, this % Grenache has become a staple on our shelves. Juicy, spicy and laced with a rocky minerality. It's one of the easiest drinking Grenaches we have had to date. A wine that encapsulates the style of the Sierra de Gredos wine in a charming, easy-going package.
4 Monos 'Cenicientos' 2015 $36.99
Cenicientos is comprised of old vine Garnacha, with a small addition of Cariñena and Garnacha Blanca giving this wine a fresh, lifted mouthfeel with a little more depth and concentration of fruit. High toned and mineral driven. This chill-able and chuggable Garnacha is truly singular and completely irresistible. Once you pop, you can't stop! Our go-to Spring sipper.
4 Monos 'Car' 2016 $39.99
Another stunner from our friends at 4 Monos, this wine is a departure from the rest. Made with 100% Cariñena aka Carignan, it has dark fruit, new leather, herbs and spice. A wine from the youngest vines of this gang of four, it shows the potential for this grape to thrive here like no other. Great freshness, precision, and depth of flavors. An exquisite, light and fresh new red from this region.
